It ^is a huge task they, ’.have undertaken, v *to fill* in the questionnayies for the dSore than three thousand registered ybien in the county. When - It J* known that the quickest ofte of these blanks can be filled out in twenty nGnutes, it will' be seen what a huge task thijUis. and to fill ono out ib that time is possible only when the re^strant has gone over the blank and knows the answers to the questions * without any ex.* planations being made... The comuiitteiy ¥00111# are where the battle* of legislation are large ly fought, and much more sejious thought is given to laws than' is generally irelieved. We believe it would b«v unwise for* the legisla- >ture to try to shorten its session, especially at this tilpe - "when there arw ao ntanr Tncgsures coming >up which will affect the State in (tit relation to the war. fl « •V \ ^ 'T* . In fact Vo arc beginning to think they can do hotter, for they talk of more dgnaible mad a^riou* things. • Another thing which some observant person hare been aotlag is that- the town are really being run b? the people from the coun try. for «n moot casco the mpn who bold thd poeitloBs of iafluence la the towns Are those who nre fresh from the country. We are glad ot this, and we shall be glad when ev- ■cry vestige of prejudice between town and country is finally broken down. The war/ls going to be a great leveller and when the son of the millionaire marches la the bat tle line by the aide of the man from the furrow, he will learn that there can be as'much redl manhood there as if the man from the soil had been born on Broadway., It'a the man after all which will eventually count. And that is true democ racy. ' • “ SALARIES SHOULD HE RAISED The session of the legislature which is now session Is face to face with d condition which will have to be met, and which will necessitate the paying of better salaries to the men who are chos en to‘serve as public officials. With out exception State and county of ficers are al) being paid too sniaH a pittance for their services. This was true several years ago. and it ia especially true now that the cost of living has been mounting so high. The greatest opposition to the raising of salaries has been coming from the people of the coun try distrieja. who do not realize what it takes to, live In town ' or city these days. A farmer, for ex- lin.ple. can live .on very Uttle cash, r he raises nearly .everything he uses. His food bill is reduced tv> a minimum, and hi* fuel bill Is nothing much. Not so with the man in the city or the towjQ. Hs must pav for everything, and at prices which peopl^ feel dispose*! to charge. So a salary which seems large to the man who buys little .of his living, .is small to the man' who buys all.
