the people of the State were anxioua irritates the surrounding pkin.
to learn the probable attitude of
Senator Tillman in the next sena
torial race, since the papers hare
been discussing the matter, this cor
respondent sought an interview
with him this morning. The Sena
tor was averse to saying anything
on the -subject, because of his
statement tw^ years ago that ho
would retire at the end of his pres
ent term. When it was brought to
his attention that this country had
become involved in the most gi
gantic war of all history since that
time, and that his services were
more needed now than ever. Its

Gov. Manning has issued a proc
lamation in which he pointed out
that it is the plain and patriotic
duty of the South Carolinians to
subscribe liberally to the bonds.
