Mr. Sanders spoke, to him and then
went to rail a policeman, and Viil?
he was telephoning Ferguson, feir-
ing that he was caught, fled.* Fi
nally Sergeant Barry, of the Baltir
more police force, succeeded In lo
cating Ferguson and arfest^ng him.
Sheriff Lucas C. Padgett was noti--
fied by telegraph and left Friday af
ternoon to bring Ferguson back.
This he did, leaving him at Colum
bia. where he is now safe behind
the bars of the State penitentiary.
Thus ends a chapter which has
had some exciting episodes. Fer
guson ‘shot hU wife, oh the night of
April 14. at Green Pond. De de
fied arrest when the sheriff^went to
apprehend him.
Alarmed at the presence of an
armed posse of negroes. Sheriff
Padgett appealed to Governor Man
ning. who authorized him to swear
in enough deputies to make the ar-
reit. Accordingly the next day
about 75 whUe deputies armed,
went to Green Pond and spent the
day scouring the woods, hut tfiey
did not find Ferguson. ' Later Fer
guson’s wife died„ and Governor
Manning offered a reward.of $100
for the arrest of the murderer.
When questioned by Sheriff Pad
gett Ferguson related what he had
done sinee the shooting. ’ He states
that he was in the swamps and
woods from Sunday till Friday
night when he caught a freight
train at the crossing near Green
Fond and went from there to Dil
lon. and on to Hamlet. N. C. p go
ing from thence to Petersburg, Pa.,
where he worked for $21 a week
He saved $180 and he and a “part
ner"' started down South. Ferguson
claiming that he wanted to come
to Creep Pond apd find out how
things- stood. His "partner” stole
the $180 while Ferguson was aaleep,
'which forced him to alight at Bal
timore where he has since been.
' Mr. Padgett stated that-* this
story of Ferguson’s -1 clears up var
ious rumors that Ferguson was in
the county, rfhd proves that he has
not been in the-eounty since he left
it.. An effort Is Wing made by Mr
Padgett to secure the reward of
,$100 yor Mr. Sanders.
