Special Draft to Appear Before Ex-

amining Board to See Whether or
. "NotThey Shall Become Soldiers of
Their Country.
The drawing yesterday by which
first draft of 687.oprt men
■was called . to the colors was
attended with greatest interest and
excitement. The first number was
drawn At o'clock Friday morn
ing and was -7*8. This was flashed
over the wire to millions of anxious
waiters- and as number after num
ber continued to be drawn, the in
terest deepened. The first number
represented a man in every division,
and called over 4.OOd to the colors.
j n Colleton the distinction of beir^
the first drawn went to Arthur Ma-
ree. Round. -
The Press and Standard in getting
out this extra has done so under dfi-
fic ulties. The numbers for the first
‘ oil names were taken from the 2:30
p. m. edition of The Charleston
Evening Post, and the others be
long distance telephone from Tl|p
Charleston American. While every
fare has been taken to be accurate
in giving these names, it is barely
possible there will be errors. The
official list will appear in The Press
and Standard of July 23.
It will be observed there has been
no distinction as to color or race,
and we have not attempted to desig
nate those of the white or negro
race. Colleton Is to furnish 231,
men. but 468 will be examined. It
b*ing thought that with the ex-
emn4ions off 23-4 will be left. The
l : «=t of,-those to be exempted was
recently published in tM* newspa-
. T>e-, and the rules were given in the
la«t issue.
We are publishing 468 names |
and a few additional names to cover
any duplication or errors which
■ nay have, occurrred.

chairman of the State Defense Coun

ment to the people of South Caro
lina: /
“-The State Council of Defense
wishes to call attention td several
features on the present prospective
situation which seem to call for
thoughtful consideration by all or
the people of the State, but especial
ly by the fjirmers.
Tremendous advances have r©~
cetitly taken place in fertilizer ma
terials and especially In funmon-
iates. Tankage, cotton' seed meal
and dried blood are, already^so high
that if i« doubtful whether .they can
he’ profitably used as fertilizing ma
terials. This is because these ma- ;
terials are iuoir r.mt more being
used as food for live itock. being
substituted to some extent lor corn,
wheat bran and other materials
which can be used for human food.
Sulphate of ammonia, which has
been largely used for fertilisers, ll
almost entirely off of the market,
being required by the. government
for the manufacture of munitions.
It. is altogether probable that next
spring the average farmer will be
unable to buy any source of am
monia . except Nitrate of*^ Soda,
which la now nearing |100 per totL
with a possible further advance.
There Is no certainty that even this
material can be obtained in ade
quate quantities ns it Is also used
largely ia munitions of war.
This ^itiRition s**ems to call for
the planting of every acre of stub
ble land and all vacant corn mid-/
dies to row peas Which is the only

In
weevil on our threshold, and with
the war presenting a kaleidoscope
of .problems which at any time may
reverse the financial outlook, our
people should show a wise conset'-
yatism this' fall. If the present out
look for a profitable business Is
realized It will present a great and
unusual opportunity to all farmers
and business men to pay off accum
ulated debts and to lay. aside a sur
plus to meet boll weevil Conditions
and other probable contingencies.
Every man who reads and thinks
should use all of his influence to
see that the prospective prosperity
Is properly utilized and. does not
eventually result in disaster. Wasts
anrd extravagance should be frown
ed upon' and made unpopular by
public sentiment.
The government will undoubtedly
offer other Issnes of bonds from
time to time and a large part of tho
profits of our people jpaust go to
ward financing the nation If tho
war la to he successfully conducted.
The Red Cross, the Y. M. C. A. and
other national charities must b«
supported and supported liberally.
After debts are paid and national
financial needs fully attended to
every (hollar not required for a mod
est but comfortable living should be
safely put as4de for future use.
The State Connell of Defense re
quests the county councils, the
newspapers and the citizens gener
ally to give the widest possible pub
licity to the,* above suggestions.
