Thursday and was pronounced by every decided success. The club members worked hard and carried home with them many new ideas to applv in their home life. The at^ tendance upon the short course was good, and although not nearly the entire membership was present, a majority of the members came, and .every eluh was represented. Misses ■Pickling-and Vain worked uno^as- inalv for the success'qT the course and their plans were ali successful. Many Prominent Visitors. Ah unusually large number of jstpre and county officials were vp'--”* and rendered assistance. MHs Kdith 1.. Parrott. State agent spent Friday with the members amh made.an earnest talk to a large au dience. Mrs. Dora Dee Walker, as sistant State agent, was present two days and* led in several important demonstrations. C. C. Cleveland. State poultry agent, gavej several cheerful talks on poultry to his club members; I.. I- Baker. State agent for boys clubs, met with the boys Fridav in a helpful conference W. R. Elliott, district agent, was here .ill three days. Miss Grade Patrick. agent for Orangehnrg county; M r s. B. A. Faust. Bamberg: Miss Sallye Ham ilton. Beaufort, assisted Colleton's agents, and were of great service to them. Fish Fry Not Heid. The fish fry to have been held Thursday evening could Jiot he held on account of rain, which was a source of keen disappointme/ii. The banks of the county are very busy just now securing subscribers- to liberty loan bonds. There seem:, to be a great deal of interest in the matter and it is thought there* will be no trouble ‘to place a suffi cient number to bring the cjuota for this county up to where it should be. The Bank of Smoaks. through its president, W, Henry Varn. is very much interested and will sub scribe to a liberal amount, Those customers of this bank desifing (o secure bonds *miay do so. and pay for them. °n th einstallment plan, tfie interest paid the bank being off set by the interest received on the* bonds. * . The Farmers & Merchants Bank, of Walterboro. has placed pn order for them on the installment plan, its customers have' what they desire, and will keep the balance., C. O. This will mean in round numbers a reduction of the property values in this coun ty of $100,000. The inference Mr. Jones draws is that the returns for this county on horses and mules is at a higher per cent than that of other counties, or the State av erage. // ■ Mr. Jones is also worried over the matter as his work is tied up and he will be delayed in getting off bis reports. May HI. —fn ihe pres ence of a large audienr• in the Hibernian hall, 'the annual com mem-ement exercises of the Citadel were held this morning, the annual orator being Dr. J. detfoulhac* Hamiltop of the I'niversity of Nofth Carolina. Diplomas wer* 1 presented to the graduating class by Orlando Sheppard of Edgefield, chairman of the board of visitors: Gov. Richard I. Manning was on • of the. distinguished visitors. The scholarly address of Dr. Hamilton was much enjoyed and was par ticularly appropriate. Capt. C. A. Graesar of the Citadel, faculty pre sided and made announcements. Col. Bond being afflicted with a se vere cold. Practically all of the members of the hoard of visitors attended the exercises. It appears that the hail storm which visited the county Sunday af ternoon did great damage in somn sections. It was a very heavy hail, and fell at WaRerboro thick and fast for a brief time. Fortunately this did ncM keep up but a few mo ments! or there woufd have been little left of vegetation. From re ports received there was hail gen erally over a large part of the coun ty. At Islandton am: that section ihere was none, and Hendersonville Ritter and points in lower Colleton escaped, lint not so with Smoaks, lierea and Pine Grove. There tM damage clone was very great.
