Walterboro. Route May 21.—
We a(Ve very - thabkful for the past
week of fine weather. The farmers
in this section nUtde a raid on Gen
eral Green, and the hard lick*
struck will be the means of enter
ing June with a grass lens-crop. ■ The
crops in this community are good,
considering the cool weather that
has recently passed. Cotton seems
to be a little sick, but we believe a
few more warm days will bring it
straight. Every farmer in this sec
tion is doing everything in his pow
er to make a hie yield at harvest
time. The writer has never seen
sm h energy being put forth as is
being put forth now. We believe.,
MK. MOOKEK WHITES

cinrts on the day of registration
should appear before the Clerk of
Court at Walterboro (and he Is the
only officer who can do this), who
will permit them to register before
hand and ghe them instructions In
tills'regard. Those w ho are s’ck or
disabled or unable to go to their re
spective precincts to register .should
semi sohie responsible and intelli
gent person at once to the Clerk of
Court and h? will provide for that
sick person's repistration. All this.
■Jpowcver, must be done before the
5th day of June. After the registra
tion is Completed on the 5th day of
June, lists, of those registered will
be- published in the county paper
and a list will also be posted at tbe
respective .precincts, and if there
is any one who has failed to pro
cure registration; he will at once be
apprehended and not onTy punished,
but will be registered as well. As
before stated, the punishment- for
wilfully . failing to register is im
prisonment in the federal peniten
tiary. without the alternative of a
fine.
If there'is any person in Colleton
county subject to registration who
does not reside in Colleton county,
it will be necessary for him to be
registered at his home without the
county and he should attend to the
matter at once by appearing before
the Clerk of Court, who will Issue
to him a registration card, which
he should mail to his home so that
It will arrive there and be in^ the
hands of his home registration offi
cials by the 5th day of June.
Let me state that this call to
arms presents a wonderful oppor
tunity to our colored citlsens to ex
hibit their worth and their patriot
ism. Their v position as a race will
rise or fall, be bettered or be mado
worse, according as they rise to the
opportunity which now* presents
itself.
Out of the first contingent to be
called to the colors. Colleton cuon
ty will be required to furnish
about 150. so it will he seen at a
glance than only about 1-10 of
those who register will really be
nailed upon ✓to serve. So that the
chances of a person registering be
ing gulled upon to serve are about
one in ten.
There is a misapprehension as to
when those who are called upon to
serve will be called out. The pres
ent information is that they will
not be called out until some time i.n
September or maybe later, and of
course, from now until then, they
will continue their usual voca
tions.
June 5th should be a memorable
day for Colleton county. It should
not be a day of festivities and polli-
fication. but it should be a day for
patriotic thoughts and actions. To
serve one’s country and one’s flag
is the highest and ‘noblest privilege
of a citizen.
I am going to request that every
minister in Colleton county read to
his congregation the proclamation
oj" the President anti the proclama
tion of tile Governor. 1 make this
request as a means not only of ad
vertisement. but also to furnish an
indication of the Solemnity of the
occasion of registering and to im
press upon the people of Colleton
county the fact that in presenting
themselves and offering their li*°s
and their fortunes for their coun
try. they are engaged in a sublim •
act.
Yours truly.

Nothing but tried and[ tested
