The writer has often wondered how it is that the business men. especially the merchants, have such a poor con ception of the value of a good paper and how much they really owe it in the way of support. As the writer f» well acquainted with the history of every newspaper that has ever been published in Darlington, he has no hesitation in saying that T hp News and Press, un der its present management, has done more to build up the business) interests of the town and county than any of its predecessors; and h'- Our merchants should bear in mind that some of the greatest for tunes in America have been built up entirely by persistent advertising, and this, too, is responsible for a great many smaller ones. also. Tjie business men of Darlington are gen-,’ erous - when It comes to giving mon ey for other purposes, but nearly all of-them are very remiss in support ing one of the most important en-' terprises that w.e have, and that is Ihe local paper. The writer begs to say, in conclu sion. that the suggestions made, above^are entirely general and not ' In any sense personal, and are based • on the writer’s observation, extend-j ing over a good many years.
