Worn Out Soils Can Be Built
Up and Enriched By Use of
More Leguminous Crops
Clemson College. S. C.
Old worn out soils can be rebuilt,
cud productive roils can be made more
productive by the fall planting of
leguminous cover crops. Never be
fore in South Carolina has there been
am h interest in this question as is
shown now. and never--was Interest
more timely.
Vetch, crimson and burr clovers can
be grown anywhere in the state, pro
vided always that they have proper
treatment. On thin clay soils, and all
sandy soils, at least 200 pounds of IS
per cent, acid phosphate should be
applied, and on the sandy soils an ad
ditional application of potash, if it is
available, would greatly benefit the
crop. At least 1000 pounds of burnt
lime, or a ton of ground limestone
should be applied if the soil is quite
acid. If the soil is not already inocu
lated. this may he accomplished by
getting soil front a field in which the
particular legume that is to be planted
has grown well, and sprinkling this
ioil on and immediately harrowing it
in the new field. Cniess it is harrow
ed into the soil of the new field the
bacteria y.hich it contains will be
'tilled by the sun.
