Columbia, Dec. 8.-—Strenuous ef-

fort will be made by the State board
of health to stamp-out the hemor-
ih’.igic type of malaria in Colleton
county. Seventeen deaths were re
ported to the board from Broxton
township, in Colleton, during the
Months of July, August and Sep
tember. The type of malaria is dif
ferent fiam what they have ever
had in that community. It is
'vnown as the hemorrhagic type, hr

sembles yellow fever and an exper^
is required to differentiate between
Mu* diseases. It is far more deadly
than'-yellow fever.
The situation in Broxton town
ship will he called to the attention
of the board of health by James A.
Hayne; M.MJ.. State health officer,
at the meeting to be hhld in Colum
bia. December 14. Dr. Hayne will
recommend that a commission be
appointed to visit the township. The
commission will exilmine all per
sons in -the township and will
take steps to improve the malarial
conditions. ’'I will urge the l,eg
Mature.*’ said Dr. Hayne. “to enact
a. law requiring corporations em
ploying imported labor to see that
each employee receives a prophy?
lactic dose of quinine daily so that
the. malarial parasites may be driven

thus these laborers will not infect
the anopheles mosquitoes, the sole
carriers of malaria and the com
munity will l*e protected where
these laborers aie at work.”

which was found at that place.
-This—weevil is- pponowm-ed—by

that Mr. Carlton, of Alabama,
