State Hoard of Health Working on Problem of Stamping Out Disease. * —* Columbia, Dec. 8.-—Strenuous ef- t ’ fort will be made by the State board of health to stamp-out the hemor- ih’.igic type of malaria in Colleton county. Seventeen deaths were re ported to the board from Broxton township, in Colleton, during the Months of July, August and Sep tember. The type of malaria is dif ferent fiam what they have ever had in that community. It is 'vnown as the hemorrhagic type, hr •yellow chijls.” The disease re sembles yellow fever and an exper^ is required to differentiate between Mu* diseases. It is far more deadly than'-yellow fever. The situation in Broxton town ship will he called to the attention of the board of health by James A. Hayne; M.MJ.. State health officer, at the meeting to be hhld in Colum bia. December 14. Dr. Hayne will recommend that a commission be appointed to visit the township. The commission will exilmine all per sons in -the township and will take steps to improve the malarial conditions. ’'I will urge the l,eg Mature.*’ said Dr. Hayne. “to enact a. law requiring corporations em ploying imported labor to see that each employee receives a prophy? lactic dose of quinine daily so that the. malarial parasites may be driven okt «f tire peripheral circulation, and thus these laborers will not infect the anopheles mosquitoes, the sole carriers of malaria and the com munity will l*e protected where these laborers aie at work.” J. if. Garris, of Colleton sent The Press and Standard a weevil ,Tuesday afternoon, which was found at that place. -This—weevil is- pponowm-ed—by those who are familiar with the boll weevil as being a genuine boll weevil. Mr. Garris wrote that Mr. Carlton, of Alabama, slate that it was a genuine boll weevil, and it was »o pronounc ed by Manager Anderson of the Colleton Telephone Company, who formerly lived in Texas, and is, therefore, familiar witlt the weevil.
