PCsslrkamV Saturday by Deputy Sheriff Lucas C. ' Padgett from H. L. Koester. man ager of the Jacksonboro Lumber Co., at Jacksonboro. Mr. Padgett got news of some Illicit sales of liquor which had been going on »t this plant and determined to put a stop to it. Armed with the necessary papers he went there ' Saturday morning and requested Koester to turn over to him all liquors he had on hand. This Koester declined to do. stating that he had none. Mr. Padgett Indicated a dosed room leading off from the office »#f the company and requested Mr. Koos; ter to open the door and 'let him see what was In it. Upon this be ing done SS bottles of beer and a quart and a half of liquor were found. Mr. Padgett observed a barrel, and asked that this also be opened. Koester Informed him that this barrel contained only near beer, less than 1 per cent of alcohol. But Mr. Padgett wds insistent that it al so be opened and it was found to be full of half pints of whiskey. All this ••stuff" was brought to Waiter- boro and Koester required to come In and surrender to the sheriff. This he did Monday and was later releas. ed on bond. —^ _ It will be recalled that this is the same man who had a solid car of liquor shipped to him several weeks ago billed as •‘brick,” which was seized at Charleston. He has been apprehended several times. Mr. Padgett is deputy sheriff, and has just been nominated for sheriff, and he stated to a representative of •'he Press and Standard that he in tended to clear Colleton county of illicit dealing in xliquor. He hag Just started, he says, and there are other places he will visit in the near futore, unless he is convinced the traffic has been discontinued. * CARDS. ****’•# *###**#*< * ■ # > R.
