To my Friends Throughout Colleton
* County:
1 deeply appreciate the votes of all
my friends who were bo ronsfderate
as to cast them for me, and I as
sure those who voted against me
that I have no feeling in the mattyr
whatsoever. It is just simply a
question of going into a fight and
doin* all you can in an honorable

way (and losing. I fought the losing
fight, and. as stated above, a*i very
graieful to my friends who voted
for me and have no enmity against
those who derided to vote for mv
opponent. *
My w ork in .this campaign and the
work 'of my friends was done upon
a high plane and 1 hope to see the
day in Colleton county when the re
sult of an election will be. indeed,
the full expression of the whole
people and 1 shall, in the future as

A CARD FROM DR. BLACK
CARD FROM B. R. l l.MFR
I desire to thank most c ordially ev^
ery man in Colleton county for the
votes they cast for me in the first pri
mary. I am in the race for the sec
ond primary, andtshall appreciate ev‘
er>- vote any voter will cast for mo.
You men heard my speeches on the
stump, and you aaw what the people
thought of them and me. by the very
flattering vote I received. I am run
ning this second race along the same
lines I did the first. I am not tied
to any man or set of men. nor have
I entered into apy combination with
any piatr'or set of men, nor have I
made any promises to any man or
set of men, tb«* reports of the cam
paign liar to the contrary notwith
standing. I ask my friends to listen
to no tales about what Ulmer has
remised, or that Ulmer is support
ing this man or that man in his race
I am running a clean and open race,
and shall continue to so run.
I again thank you for your sup
port.' and a continuance of it.
Respectfully, • „
B. R. ULMER.
Walterboro:
It is impossible for me to see per
sonally all of my friends in the
county. I do not believe that a
house to house canvass would be
profitable, because every voter in the
county knows me and knows what
I stand for. I want to he Superin
tendent of Education because I de-
ire to spend the balance of my life
working for our children. All of my
thought is for the upbuilding of Col
leton county educationally and mor
ally. I want to see a generation of
young men and women with trained
heads and consecrated hearts, I be
lieve the school to be one of th**
chief pgenrifcs for upbuilding char
acters. 1 have had great experience
in school - matters and my w hole
’eait is in the work. I am not mak
ing this office a stepping stone t i
anything else. There is no other
work 1 ever expect to do besides this.
The people will have my whole mind,
heart and aou| centered in, ( school
work. I feel sure that Colleton
county believes in my sincerity and
that 1 will be elected on next Tues
day.
jji I promise to perform every dutv
vof tl»e offlc,. to the satisfaction of
everybody and to fulfill all of mv
promises made on the stump. 1,
joromise that no man shall he asliam-
fynl or regretful that he voted for me.
Very truly yours.

Editor The Press and Standard:
I desire to tiiank the voters of Col
leton county for the handsome vote
received in the first primary election,
and while it was not enough to give
me the office or to put me in the
second race. I appreciate it none the
less, l have some friends who did
what they could for me. and to them
1 am especially grateful. To those
who voted against me I hare no 111
feeling and wish them as well as 1
do those wfio voted for me. Had I
been elected I should have tried io
give the county an administration
which would have been a credit

Between the dates of October 2nd
and 7th, the Southern Carolina Asso
ciation will promote a National Pay-
Up week which is held yearly by the
merchants and bankers of the United
States.
The Pay-Up Week idea was started
by the National Association of the
Merchants Trade Journal, and last
year was a wonderful success. Ev
ery business ma n feels the constant
pressure of credit business. Credit,
which is the great necessary conien-
fencf. of all business, becomes panic*
ulaily abused in the retail field. The
idea of this week is to assist the mer
chants to collect some of their old
long standing bills; this well enable
these men "ho have extended credit
to receiv their just money in order
that they may meet some of their
hills. Th*. date was chosen for the
fall in order that the merchants can
prepare for the new year and have
money in which to pay for their new-
stock.
Full information about this week
"ill be published i n the next issue of
this paper and we hope that you will
look for it and become, interested i n
this nhijon wide movement.
