Those Fussy Automobiles.
The most disturbing element at
the campaign meeting Saturday was
the noise created by automobiles.
It would seem that* owners of cars
attending a meeting such as this
would be a bit more thoughtful of
the proprieties of the occasion ami
come a little ahead of time, or at
least stay until it is over. Several
of the speakers Saturday had an
awful time trying to make them
selves heard above the din of earn
coming up near the stand or leav
ing. This was especially noticeabh?
at the conclusion of former Gover
nor mease's speech and the begin
ning of Mr. Cooper's. The latter
candidate had a hard time ti7ing to
make himself heard, and it was dis
tracting to those who desired to hear
his speech

The Four-Founty Fair.
> •'■to*.
One of the greatest things the
Southern Carolina Association will
accomplish during it’s first year will
be the staging of a four-county fair
at Walterboro this fall, it w*8, in
deed. an important decision the
counties made to agree to this four-
county fair proposition. The'meet
ing and commingling of the people
of the four counties will have a far
reaching Influence, and will result In
much good to the counties Interest
ed. This section of the State muat
Btick together and work out prob
lems confronting the people. This
can be done only after one has a
thorough knowledge of conditions
and of the resources of the section.
This can be gained better at a fair
exhibiting tne products of the sec
tion than In any other way. The
Press and Standard Is delighted that
the fair will be staged ‘ks a four-
county affair this fall.
Walterboro and Colleton county
especially should profit by this
Southern Carolina Fair. With her
fair grounds and buildings already
erected and equipped, the matter of
holding a fair will npt entail any
great expenditure of time or money
at this time. The benefits, to be de
rived locally will be Immeasurable.
To begin with there will he *ev«wal
thousand people of the other coun
ties who will come here to attend
the fair. They will come targoty by
automobile, and they will see the
county at first hand. They wil see
Walterboro and will enjoy the hos
pitality of her people. It will be a
time when much work for the fu
ture development of the town and
the county ran be done. That our
people will measure up to the re
quirements we do not doubt for an
instant.
Hut It must not be forgotten that
thla county will be in competition
with three other counties, and Col
leton County MUST make at gooff
a showing as any, if not the beat.
We can do It If our people will get
busy and determine to do so. We
must have the best exhibits from the
county we have ever had. Every
citizen can help In'thla. and we be
lieve Hvey will. If only a good ear
of com, or a fine atalk of cotton, or
a Pig or anything worth exhibiting
is sent by each .fititen we will make
a finr showing.
Urass Hand For Walterboro-
■ — N,
Walterboro should hav«. a brass
band. That there to need for a g<
baad here is not questioned. Ever;
year there are hundred* of dollars
sent out of Walterboro for music
which might as well be made here
and save sending away of this mon-
^ ey.. Then thcVe is the matter of x a
public place, for band concerts which
should receive attention. The peo
ple of Walterboro and the sur
rounding country would welcome
some place where they could g<f
once and a while and hear some
good music. With the sdv<uU of the
electric light In Walter^ors> it Is
possible to light some area in a cen
tral part of town well enough to
have a band stand and a few rustic
’ seats for those who wish to go out
to hear the music. For Council to
advocate and foster such an organi-
kation would cone properly wltMn

THE 8MALL TOWN’ PEST
Mr. Editor:
Have you ever met that small
town pest, who meets yoar newly ar
rived friend or prospective citizen
and tells him what a rotten town j
this is? -*
I know you have and I’ll leave it
to you if he isn’t about the worst of
our pests.
He usually starts off and tells Mr.
Stranger that he remembers the time
that he could have bought the
ground that the court, house is on
for about $10.00. but that he <Md
not and is glad of it.
He knows everybody and pro
ceeds to tell Mr. Strqfciger that so
and so is a crook and tfiat you can t
put any confidence ip this man and
the othey fellow. He knocks the
town, he knocks the people and he
takes a rap at everything in the
country.
We have often wondered why in
"‘tarnation" he doesn’t movq. No
body’s asked him to stay, but you’ll
always find him sticking around with
his little hammer. But jasf let soni“
body start a move of public benefit
and he is especially active. It’s no
good; it’s a graft and the fellow that
promotes It Is a ^rafter. But at the
same time you’ll hear him say that
no osie ever tries to do anythiog for
the town.
We have been in a good many
towns and whenever we didn't like
the town or CAildn’t stand the peo
ple. why. we quietly folded our tent
an ( | stole away, minus the hammer,
however.
I wonder if Mr. Knocker ever
stopped to think that any little town
is a good little town when a fellow
attends to his bnslness and gives the
other fellow a chance to do thf same.
It has always been our motto to
boost the place that we were in if
it was pot for hnt a week’s stav
That’s the way to get along.-> Of
course people are crazy about you-
when you tell them what a rotten
town they have and and that their
leading citizens are a bunch of
crooks. Oh yes. yes indeed.
We once visited a town where,
when on* went In there was promin
ently displayed the following sign;
"Welcome to our city.” On goinz
out there wa« another sign: "If voj
don’t like onr town, there's the
road.”
We think it too had , that all
towns can’! have that same sign
printed for the benefit of Mr. Knock
er.
In conclusion let’s advise him to
sell bis hammer and buy a horn.
Being a sore-head never got a
man anvthing l^t’s all tell every
body that we have the best town on
earth and If everybody talks that
and thinks that we will soon have
that same town every where.
Tha world has no place for n
knocker. His time is past; its hand
is stretched out to the fellow •gho’e
a booater.
