J. L MOORE ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY
J. E. Moore, who asnousces his
c&ndM&ry for re-election to the of
fice of Highway Coir.nilHloncr, haa
made a rather remarkable record.
He was first elected in and
served ^or three terms. When lie
took charge of the office, the credit
of the county was very much Im-
•paired, the county paper being dis
counted at fram 20 to 40 per cent.
At the beginning of this term of ser
vice Capt. Moore states the records
of the county show that It v.ai in
debt 9101,000 and that he paid off
this indebtedness and v. hen he went
out of office, left 118,000 to the
credit of the county. Of the 9191,-
000 indebtedness paid or liy Cap*
Moore, 960,000 was for the raii~ja1
bonds.
During this term, he built the an-
nei to the Court House and remod
eled the entire interior. He also
rebuilt every bridge in tV county.
He was elected again in I'M! and
took charge of the office on January
6th. 1915. He lacked only a few

The chain gang has been under
the supervision of P. M. Buckner.
Twelve mules are used with the
gang. This gang has built one mile

ship and three miles in Verdier on
the road from Wfalterboro to the
county poor farm. From Waiter-
boro, the gang has built to Within
tw 0 miles of "Rice Patch,” a dis
tance of 18 miles. All of this is
standard 'road. It may also be men
tioned that on this road there have
been two long causeways to rebuild,
the one across Great Swamp near
\V«lterboro, and the other Crews'
Ford across the Little Salke-
haUhie river. It will be remember
ed that the causeway across Great
Swamp is in three townships, Ver
dier. Bell and Heyward. Some of
the material used in completing this
road had to be hauled a distance of
three miles. The bridge on both
these causeways have been built new

* PINK HILL SCHOOL *
****************
Jacksonboro, June 20.—On Thurs
day night, June 16. quite a number
of folk assembled at the Pine Hill
school building to witness the clos
ing exercises of this school. We
have had a very successful term un
der the efficient management of Mi^s
IdelL> E Williams, of Williams.
The program consisted of recita
tions. songs, tableaux, pantomimes
and short plays. Every one present
seemed to enjoy the exercises to the
utmost and Miss Williams received
many congratulations upon the train
ing and successful rendition of the
program.
A special feature was the presenta
tion of a gold medal to little Miss
Jenny Lee Garvin. The medal was
given for attendance. During a nine
month’s session little Miss Garvin
was absent only one day and then
on account of illness. The presenta
tion was made by Mr. J. M. Padgett
in a very brilliant manner.
^liss Williams left Friday morn
ing for her home near Williams. Her
many friends regret losing her pres
ence in the community and w> hope
to have her with us •P&ln for |}ext

votes of being successful over three
very influential men of the county
in the first primary. The first work
was to rebuild the three road graders
and put in order all the rolUng
stock. He also bought 12 addition
al mules and organiied his forces
to rebuild end repair the roads and
bridges of the county.
The bridge gang under the super
vision of A. M Frances has rebuilt
nearly every bridge in the county.
The construction force under L. H.
Zeigler, foreman, and 12 men has
constructed the road from Waiter-
boro to Cannady’s bridge, a distance
of 12 miles on the road to 9t.
George,. From ' Cannady’s bridge,
they widened and constructed the
Augusta road to th«* Bamberg line
near Minus’ bridge, across the Edis-
to River, a distance of 13 miles.
From that , point, they began work
on the public, road leading to Wal-
terboro by Smoaks and Ruffin. They
have completed this road to a point
between th«> home of P. J Wilson
and Ruffin, a distance of about 9
miles. These high*a>» have beeji
made standard, that is. 39 feet wide,
stumps and roots taken out, graded
26 feet and where clayed 16 feet.
Captain Moore has organized a
force in Broxton township and placed
it under the supervision of l^fe Jones
who, with It) laborers, has done sonic
excellent work Beginning at the
Bamberg line, at Folk's °ld mill on
the Bamberg road to WalterbAro.

and the work speaks for itself.
Maintenance of Roads.
(’apt. Moore's plan for maintain
ing the roads after they have been
built is as follows: When a section
of four miles is completed, it ie his
plan to turn over this section to
some good farmer to drag after each
rain, or as often as may be neces
sary. Drags have been construct*d
and placed at intervals along the
highways Tor the use of persons iu
keeping up the roads. For instance,
tlie road from Jaiksonboro to Horse
Shoe, a distance of six miles, is be
ing kept up by C. W. Butler; front
