Perhaps few people in Colleton
county realize the magnitude of the
business done by Mr. C. F. Rlzer. of
Olar, which Is estimated by the Au
gust Chronicle at $600,000 a year
inrthe following article, which will
be read with interest by the people
of this section: i
The Atsugua Week has brought to
the attention of Augusta, and in
short all over this country, a man in
a little town within seventy miles of
Augusta io South Carolina, on the
Seaboard Air Line Railway, who is
one of the largest merchants In the
interior of South Carolina and the
largest between Charleston and Au
gusta, between Savannah and Co
lumbia. This'man lives in th* little
town of Olar. S. C., with a popula
tion of only a few hundred, an;! is
mayor of that town, is a leading cit
izen of that town, a leading church
man. leading merchant, the owner
Df a business that does $500,000 a
year, the president of a bank, a
steward in the Methodist church-, and.
in short, Mr. C. F. Riser is one of
the leading citizens of Barnwell
county, with a large business and
hosts of friends In Barnwell, Bam
berg and Colleton counties. .
Mr. Riser is strictly a self-made
man. He was born in Colleton, 8.
C„ in 1869, and bad a high saliool
education at Sheridan school,
Orangeburg, S. C. A representative
of the Atsugua Association not long
since called on Mr. Riser_Jo interest
him in Atsugua Week and Forg Day.
Mr. Riser is never too busy to give
gudltnce to a drummer or listen to
a business proposition. It only took
Mr. Rizer ten minutes after talking
about Atsugua Week and the fire in
Augusta to decide that he would
work up a crowd of Fords from
Barnwell county to come to Augusta
and participate in Atsugua Week and
specially on Ford Day—Wednesday.
May 10th. It is too early yet to pre
dict who will be the winners of the
prizes offered for the county haring
the largest number of machines in
line, but It is generally conceded
that the winner will have to go some
to beat the aggregation that Mr. Ri
zer will bring. The manner in
which Mr. Rizer hag entered the At-
sugua competition is characteristic of
the man. He is gelf-made and that he
has worked weU and stands high is
the concensus of opinion in and
around Olar. Barnwell. Bamberg.
Colleton, Allendale, etc.
Not only is Mr. Rizer the biggest
merchant, in that section, but stands
‘in the- front ranks of the merchants
of South Carolina. Whether bank
ing. in merchandising or public wel
fare work or in church activity and
help.
By His Own Mqjt.
.Wh^fTffr^Tlizer has accomfiTfgffed
has U^en done solely by his own mer
it atfid the loving help extended by a
devoted wife and helpmate. Though
only 45 years of age and in the
prime of life, he towers among his
fellows a giant in prosperity and ac
complish men*. Just Aa, physically
he lifts hU head above the average
man.
Lark of means prevented his get
ting a college education after he had
completed the courag at Sheridan
High school. Orangeburg, for though
he longed to take the higher branch
es of schooling, conditions made it
necessary that he begin life’s com
mercial struggle's without them-
Fortunately he married early in
life a good woman, intelligent, de
voted and true, who has >ver been
his counsellor and assistant in his
ambitious plans. She was of a fine
Carolina family. Miss Carrie Jones
of Bamberg, and to them have been
born three daughters and a son who
gives promise of being a worthy sue-
cesror to his father.
In the MHHon < la**.——
Today Mr. Rizer is doing a gener
al merchandise business of over
$600,000 annually, making him one
of the leading merchants of the
South, though this is but one
branch of his activities. Since 1891.
when he started in this line with
practically no capital and only his
own great abilities as assets, he has
been steadily advancing by will, gr.t
and determination until today be
occupies an enviable position
throughout this section. As a deal
er in livestock h* is one of the larg
est In Carolina and Olar. and he is
owner jof two banks—one at Olar
and the other at Lodge. In agricul
tural implements he deals immensely
his supply store being krvown to
farmers and planters over a wide
area, many of whom will buy ferti-
lizttr from no other house.
Immense Ford Trn4.cs
His distribution of Ford [r
an instance of how he works Hav-
ing procured the agency he went
about making It the biggest of its
kind. Olar is not the place the or
dinary man would choose as an au
tomobile distributing point, thong*'
two years ago he took the Ford
agency, and in, that Wane he has sold
more than 1,100 of the busy little
huetlere. and this year alone he will
dispose of more' than COO. The
trouble Is not with his selling then
fast enough, but of getting them to
aell. With him the demend always
exceeds the supply, though on one
occasion he received in one shipment
a irsinload of otahtoen cars.
fhi« man is coming to Augusta
with a string of Ford cars srhich ho
himself has sold and which la thus
a testimonial of his ability, as In an
other way they tell of the greatness
of John Henry, of Detroit. Every
Augustan should hunt np Mr. Riser
and thank him tor the part be wiK
play in the week’s festivities, for he
will be here with bells on, as the
boys say.
