There ate several new candidates
cards in this issue of The Press and
Standard, and several others are
spoken of in connection with some of
the offices. There will doubtless be
several announcements next * week.
It is expected that Commissioner
Moore w ill make formal announce
ment of his candidacy next week.
Rew B. R. Clmer,has a card in this
issue announcing his entry into poli
tics, as an aspirant for the office of
highway commissioner.
The card of Hon. Richard S. Wha
ley for congress from this district
was published* last Week. He Is of
fering for re-election and will be op
posed by Col. Jas. G. Padgett of Wal
terboro.
(.ogle H. Zelgler.
The card of Louie H. Zeigler for
Sheriff of Colleton county' will oc
casion much surprise over the coun
ty. It was not dreamed that he
would enter*the race till Just^a few
days ago, when the rumor began to
take definite shape, and his card was
forthcoming. That he has entered
the race adds interest to an already
interesting campaign for this office.
Mr. Zeigler has been a resident of
the county all his life, having been
born and reap'd in the Wolfe Creek
section. He has taken an active in
terest in affairs' pertaining to the
political life of the county, and' has
been executive committeeman for
the past 20 years. For 13 years he
has been superintendent of the chain
gang, and has recently been employ
ed as superintendent of the construc
tion gang, working Under Cdmmfs-
sioner Moore.
There, are many who will rally *o
the supnort of Mr. <jSeig!pr .and he
has sppporte-s who predict that be
will win in the coming primary.

F. G. Renton.
Among the candidates announcing
this week may he mentioned Frank
G. Benton, of Hendersonville, who
announces Jiimself as a candidate for
the office now held by Magistrate H.
J. Givens. Mr. IJenton is not un
known to the people of his district
and to the people of the county. He
lias jbeen a resident of Heyward
township all his life, and while he
has never before entered t^he politi
cal arena, the people of his hom“
know him well. He states that he
has assurances of support which
shoulcj land him in the office.
Hugo S. Strickland. "•
The card of Hugo S. Strickland,
who makes official announcement of
his intention to become a candidate
in the approaching primary for re-
election as county superintendent t>f
education/appears in this Issue. Mr.
Stfifklnnd is serving his first term
a* bounty superintendent of educa
tion. having been elected three years
ago after a heated political campaign
Prior to that time he had made two
campaigns, and hence is one of the
best knq.wq office holders in the
county*. His work is such as takes
him out into the county where he
meets with patrons and school work
ers. and thus he has opportunities to
know the people- and the county as
few men have.
Mr. Strickland has had a sucess-
ful term of office, and the schools
have shown much Improvement dur
ing the past three years. A number
of consolidations have taken place,
and several handsome school build
ings have been erected. A wave of
educational Interest seems to .have
spread over the county. Mr. StiUp
land's friends attribute to him much
of the progress made in. school work
in the county since he has been
countv superintendent of education,
and they say further that the man
v ho gets more votes than Mr. StfUk-
Utnd will be the next county superim
tendent of education.
