It is probable that soon an effort win be made to perman- entlv improve some of our principal streets instead of spending large sums of money yearly in useless and unsubstantial shovelling of loose dirt. It seems certain that within a few years or even i^onths the town will be on a great trunk line of the \tlantic Coast Line Railroad: at Vast if the town will “go after it.” we can get it. It is. therefore, ap parent that we need the best, most competent, energetic, and public spirited men at the helm in our t town, not dWy to guard against dis.- aster in the payment of obligations a treadv Incurred, but also to forge ahead along new and progressive lines. Onr business men must for get personalities and immediate self interest in one great united effort to make of Walterboro a/\ larger -.rity and thus bring to. ajl the citizens greater ultimate gains. Personally I am willing to mak« almost any sacrifice for the good of the town at this critical period. I do not object to paying taxes or as suming any other common burden if only I am convinced that the tax money is being properly and care fully expended for good and perman ent purposes and that the town is re ceiving benefits proportionate.to the burdens borne. ThKI believe is the attitude of all of our good citizens.^ Our town election is near at hand. May we hope that in this election all personalities, all small bickerings, all petty jealousies, and all selfish ness may he east aside and -patriot v i«m. public sph'it and self sacrifice for the rommon good bo substituted in their stead? Let’s hiy to forget the "personal’element.” which tends to make polities distasteful'to the average business man • who desires only .to help the cause of good gov ernment. For my part I expect to voteor those.men and those prinrjples and measures which seem to me to be for the best interest of the town in which I have always lived and work ed and in which 1 expect to continue io reside.' Nor do 1 cv, ect *) <t.i- eeal mv vote or hide my hand. This ought to be the attitude of all voters. It ought not to be true that Votes are cast for purely personal reasons. The personal element as such ought to he ellnvinated. Because I honest ly thinkrthat a certain man is better! Suited to fill a particular office and , cast my vote for him furnishes no , good reaspn why my neighbor should j think that 1 have voted ngainst him I vote against no man for purely per-.j sonal reason?., just as I vote for no j candidate for like reasons. JVr- j snnaily I might be more attached to i my neighbor than 1 am to some oth er candidate who opposes him: 4 hut suppose my neighbor is nof as well fitted to fill the office to which both aspire, must I forget or ignore, pub lic duty for the sake of friendship alone? To illustrate and prove the point I am trying to make I do not hesi tate to state my position in the ap proaching election. 1 expect to vote for W. W. Smoak for mayor, because I believe him to be perfectly honest, unusually well equipjjed to properly fill the office, abounding in energy and possessed of more pure public spirit and will ingness to sacrifice self for the com mon good than any man in Walter-, boro. Everybody must admit that Smoak spends much of his tii^e,. energy, a«d money in inaugurating and pushing forward unselfish plans for the uplifting and be<term^nt of the town. He is peculiarly Interest-, vd and especially fitted for public service, and he ii "on the job” all the time. He is making ft personal sacrifice to occupy the mayor’s of fice and I do not think that the peo ple should rebuke and discourage such public spirit as Rmoak posses ses by defeating him at the polls. This does not mean that I have ary personal feeling against any other candidate. They are all mv , tiends and if one of the'nFgets mad because I vote for Smonk I am sorry. ’ am not voting axain^t my friends. I am voting only for my conception of puhfic good. Of course others have the same right to vote for some one other than Smoak for the same reasons I am vrtting for Smoak.-j> If so.'f have no quarrel with them. Let ns all he honest and he uninfluenced bv purely personaL^or spiteful mo- tives. \ ' For the same reason I expect to vote for D. R. Black as a member of Founeii; and I hone he will he re elected Clerk and Treasurer. I have '■een a member of Council with l^hick four years and 1 know he is the best member of Council 1 ever served with. He Is necessary. It is the right and duty of every voter to state where ho stands and give his reasons therefor. I have done thia and I hope nobody will be mad about 4t. If some do get mad, I am sorry, and I know they will aooner or later see their error, because whoever Is elected I expect to still work with and for them for the good of Walterboro— our home town.
