In South Africa, among the natives,
there is a custom which has never
been mentioned by any traveler In hla
tales In the Tranakel, Basutoland nod
Bechuanaland, nearly every fair-staed
village has a field set aside for strang
ers. In n village where the king re
sides. usually hia chief wife ia told off
to cultivate this field and store away
all the product in the upper part of
her hut, and if In any adjacent village
some chief woman la saddled with tha
work, no man of the tribe ia permitted
to touch any food thus stored.
The king’s wife, or whoever culti
vates the land, takes her shars of the
product and makes her living out of
It. but all oyer and above the amount
actually consumed must be set aside
and preserved. She may not trade
with any other wife of the king.
' This field Is known as tho "Strang-
ers’ Field." Whenever- a atranger
comes to the village he makes known
his wants to the king and he Is im
mediately relieved. The best hut In
the village Is set apart for hlm(.”hs
eats the food of the stranger’s field,
and the wife of the king prepares the
food for him with her own hand. He
remains a week, or a month, or any
reasonable length of time, aad his de
parture la never hastened. Sometimes
he stays long enough to become a
members bf the tribe. N
An amusing feature of this custom
Is the fact that indig'ent members of
the tribe occaslonallyjeave the village
and go to other villages and become
strangei's, so that very often when a
familiar face baa been mlised from a
certain village and anyone asks where
So-and-So went or what became of
him, the toqujrer has been gravely In
formed that So and So was poor and
became a stranger. Some laxy men
go around from village to village, and
when they return to fhelr original kraal
they spin the yarn that they have
been working in the mines! Then
again one often can run across So-and-
So in a distant village living on the
fat of the land as a stranger and be
ing treated ?o royal hospitality.
There are no: beggar* in Africa.
When a man become* too poor to get
along comfortably he makes a circuit
of the adjacent villages ak a stranger.

instrumental In saving the life of
Queen Victoria in March, 1«82. When
a young man named Roderick Mac-
lean attempted to lire a pistol at the
queen ot. the platform of Windsor sta
tion. Wilson, with his umbyella, struck
up tiie assailant’s arm, for which act
lie was summoned to Windsor casfle
and personalty thanked by the queen.
The boy s act gave risa to a clever
pun. It was suggested that ho re
ceive a peerage, and Basil Young, the
engineer, remarked that if this were
done bis coat-of-arms ought to be n:i
umbrella, with the motto: “Pour la
Reme.” As a subaltern , he rode in
famous midnight steeplechase at Mel
ton. He served with distinction in
the South African war. and was an
aide-de-camp of General Baden-Rowell
throughout the siege of Mufeking,
being se veral times mentioned'in dis
patches.
