Chemical analysis of coffee, tea.
and Coca-Cola served in the home,
at restaurants and at soda foun-
tains, shows that coffee and tea con
tain ’approximately twice as much
caffeine as does Coca-Cola. la oth
er words, two glasses of Coca-Cola
rat approximately equivalent to one
cup of tea or coffee, so far as the
amount of caffeine is concerned.
The only material difference in
chemical - composition is that both
'tea and coffee contain tannic acid,
a substance found quite generally in
plants, whereas COcaCola/ does not.
Coca-Cola may therefore be describ
ed as an “Improved caffeine contain
ing beverage” in. which the tannic
acid has been left out, the caffeine
reduced in quantity and a delightful
combination of fruit flavors added.
To use tea or coffee and eschew
Coca-Cola is therefore a case of
“straining at a gnat and swallow
ing a camel.”
