Dr. Hayne before leaving expressed the hope that other counties would immediately take up the question of the advisability of having county health officers, as the step would . mean much toward Improvement of general health conditions throughout the state. He pointed out that North Carolina has 12 whole time county health officers, none of whom Is re-/ reiving a salary of less than 92.< and that already they had rendc Invaluable service to the state board of health. Dr. Hayne will direct his effort* to ward thd 1 creation of a county board of health In Hlchland county, which he hopes In the near future will follow the example of GreenviHe county. Spartanburg Skyscraper Completed. Spartanburg.—The Chapman build ing. the only office building of a "sky scraper" type Hi tl I Recent this city, was for mally opened Recently. Hear on a^d John Gary Evans. "\ Cotton Planting in Anderson. Andetrfqn -J. S. Fow ler, a large planter of Anderson county, has al ready planted about 50 acres in- cot ton On an adjoining farm the owner is still gathering cotton front the' field Mr Fowler Is an advocate of early cotton planting, and usually is the first to put seed in the groupd in this county. Last year he made a large crop on his early planting. He figures that the only thing he can'jiose by early planting is the seed, and so touch can be gained If the proper aea- aons come. Several fanners in the county still have cotton in the field, and one small farmer, haa gathered about 15 bales during the^kut few weeks. Olar Has Destrictlve Fire. Dlar —A destructive fire visited Olar one afternoon recently, burning all the buildings of one block and inflict ing a loss of over ICO.iWO The flames were discovered at 4'30 o’clock be tween the buildings of E. T. Morris and L Morris. Seven buildings were destroyed Among the buildings to go were the postoffice and the dis pensary. Only the postofflee build ing was ion as the malls ahd fixtures were removed, The entire stock Of the dispensary was burned. ■ Museum Purchases "TAIels." Charleston — The Charleston mu seum has purchased 'a series of orig inal lishyUinisn clay v tablets r with cuneiform inscriptions dating from ehout 22ts*:> It C . which r.re for use in the museum's traveling school ex hibits according to an announcement by I’irector l*eul M. Rea. in the March bulletin of the organization. Land Will Lie Fallow. 1 - recently there were 199 la the state penitentiary 57 prisoners on the state farms. Of the prisoners in the penitentiary 1M were men and 39 women. All the prisoners employed on the state farm were men. Under normal conditions It reqnlree about 199 con vices to work the'2,409 acres of cultivated land at the state farms la Kershaw hnd Sumter coun ties. Much of the land will lie fallow this year. Practically no cotton will be planted at the state farm. The email force of convicts will be used to &ltlvate food crops exclusively. About 900 acres.have been sowed in wheat and oats. Some com has al ready been planted and more will be planted later on. As there ta not enough labor available to cultivate the big cotton crop which the state farm haa been planting for yearly It will not hr grown this season. The penitentiary directors have disposed >f the mutes they do not need on the •tete farms. The chair factory at the penitenti ary la turning about 55 rattan rockers per day which are sold In various >arts of the South. Forty male con victs and 12 female convicts are em ployed In the chair factory. The ash ind maple for the arms, frames agd “ockers of the chairs are shipped from the lumber mills In the motim telns. The rattan reed la Imported from/the West Indies through New All the parts of tile chairs are e on the premises from raw ma- rial. Yorl Government Dam Completed. The wicket dam at the government .orks on the ('ongaree liver to com pleted and will be ready for operation ih soon as- the coffer dam cribs are removed. The jtovernment forces have a der rick boat at work lining the cribs now. After the wicket dam to in op- sration, there will be three feet of water in the basin at the foot of Ger- vals street. The government locks have long been ready for the passage of boats. « The dam which the government has erected across the (’ongaree rlv- >r Is of the Chanoine type and was in vented by a famous French engineer. It was first used successfully on the Seine and the Loire In France. The government has built a long chain of t’hanoine dams on the Ohio river. The Black Warrior river Is made nav igable up to the coal fields of Ala bama by wicket dams.
