Meara, of .Tarboro, 8. C., died In a
local hospital this morning aa the
result of a pistol duel with William
Barnhill, of Tillman. 8. C.. at Till
man, Saturday evening. The cause
of the shooting is not known. Meara
ia survived by his wife and two sons.
His body was sent to TSrboro - to

afternoon by Willie Barnhill, at Till
man, a small station on the South?

here.
It seem* that bad blood had been
existing between the two for some
time, and that about a week ago. Mr
Barnhill, who la from Georgia, wa*
requested by some of the cltisens t<?
leave the community on account of

leave; that yesterday afternoon,
Meara walked up to Barnhill- and,
placing hit hand on the latter's

out the r.ght side. Immediately It is
said, Mr Meara drew his pistol and

Mr Means was sent or the first
train to a hospital In Savannah, in
hopes of saving his Lfe. phicb now
seems improbable. Mr Meara ia
about 35 years of age. and consid
ered one of the best men in Jasper
county. He comes from one of the
oldest families in South Carolina, and
the affair ia regretted by all around
here.
Barnhill surrendered to Magistrate
Boyles, of Tillman, who tamed him
over to Sheriff Porter! of Jasper coun
ty, who brought him to the Jail at
Rldgeland.^where he in being held,
without bond, pending the outcome
of MV Mean’s wounds.
