P<flr Many years Walterboro with
its marrslous development along
business lings has felt the need of
wholesale housea, and the first reali
zation of its desires along this line
has come, ^be Waltorboro Qrocary-f
Company has opened for business In
thA Wichman buUding across from
the depot. The alto secured by the
Company Is ideal, the switching ar
rangement being excellent.
A large stock has been ordered to
fill the bnlldlag and trade has already
commenced. .. In a few'months Wal
ter boro will have* the equal of any
town 4!ong that line. L. B. Smith for
merly with t|M Colleton Mercantile
and Manufacturing Company of Rit
ter and a man of much experience
in the wholesale business, is the
President of the company and will
have active charge of the business.
J. 8. Smith, another wholesale man
of note. Is Secretary of the Company.
The building is now being remodel
ed preparatory to the reception of the
largo line of goods which this concern
will carry.
Such industries as the above are
more than welcosse to Walterboro,
and the opening of wholesale houses
is ths indication of the sound busi
ness conditions of the town and coun
ty.

Negro Kills Negro.
A shooting acrape which restulted
in tho death of one negro and the
ration of another waa staged
Pleasant Grove section of the
Inst Sunday. It seems that
a disturbance arose at a church which
was later taken up again on tbe pub
lic highway. James Roberta, who
did the shooting, says that Richard
Henderson advanced upon him with
a razor which Caused Roberts to
shoot. Another version of the story
has it that Roberts had concealed
himself behind n fence, after having
gone home and gotten his gun. and
that when Henderson came along the
shot was fired from ambaoh. Hen
derson was operated upon but later
died as a rssult of the wounda.
Roberts came to jail and surrendered
soon after the crime.
