June 28^—Special: That the course of true love never runs smooth was exemplified here Thursday, when Walter Aiken and Miss Iva Lanier went through the marriage ceremony for the second time in two weeks. . Some time-ago. when this couple decided to go down life’s road together, they went to a man who claimed to be a notary pub lic. Being without a license, this pretended officer proceeded to write one. and then and there performed what .he calletl the marriage cere mony. He charged Aiken $2.3(* for the license. 75 cents for marrying him and 75 tents tor putting the no tice in the paper. The happy couple went their way rejoicing, thinking everything had been done properly; but before they knew what was hap pening. Aiken was arrested and plated in jail on the charge of ab duction. ^ ' ' Solicitor Timmerman took up the ease and conferred with the girl’s mother in Columbia. N'o-.v it ap pears that the ceremony v.as perform «d by a man who had, once upon a time, been a notary pv.ffhc. but whose commission had long since been re voked by the Governor. This he did in the office of Probate Judge Drafts, with all due dignity and solemnity. After all this, the lovers are skeptical, and are yet afraid that something will come up to separate them. Penlel Festival a f.rancl Surer**. Walterboro, Rt. 5, June 28.— Special: The Ice Cream Festival given at Peniel Wednesday last was a grand success. At 5 o’clock the crowd had filled the schoolyard, with the gentleness of gentlemen and la dies and a spirit of unity prevailed. Peniel is no longer looked upon as the Peniel of old. The trustees. Messrs Herndon. O’Quin and Ramsey spared no ef forts in carrying everything out in a business-like manner. Much credit is due Hfcgm for the splendid recep tion given In honor of the boys and girls in and around Peniel. Ice cream was on sale from 5 o'clock until 12 that night. At 6:30 the home«1nade cpndy, prepared by Misses Herndon and Wrenn. was sold and a special feature of the evening. Immediately afterwards bouquets were placed on sale and the most beautiful flowers were worn by every man, woman and child. At S:C<» delightful cakes were of fered for sale and the following were declared winners: ; 1— Miss Inez White. 2— rMiss Ida May Strickland. 3— Miss E\a Ihley. When the extraordinary cake of Miss Ida Lee Wrenn was offered the crowd came nearer and a quietness prevailed. A number of bids were submitted. 1st. J. J. Trowell, $4.75; 2nd. Col. Jas. Speights. $5.00; 3rd. Joe Graves, Jr., $5.05. Mr Graves was sole owner of that splendid cake, which was baked in a heart shape by Miss Wrenn. The crowd was very magnificent. The evening is one to be long remembered in social circles Again we congratulate the 1 Ijpys of Peniel for their splendid becayiour and excellent entertainment. ,.,The net proceeds amounted to $33.75.
