Governor F}lea»o this afternoon hon

A. Garter and Frank Tarbeaux. who
are wanted in New York, for alleg
ed wire tapping. The men were turn
ed over to Gotham police officers,
Who took them at once to New York.
At the. hearing Governor HUvse
said:
“My position is this: Every peq-
isition must stand or fall on its own
merits, and they are governed oy the
national and state laws which" are
provided. When the Governor of
one State asks that a m'quisitiou he
honored by the Governor of another
'State.*, that particular case stands
ttpon its own merits When a party
is held subject to the order of !!;••

“Now, when these men are brought
hcrc, today by my order, they aro in
the custody of Richland County, and
a writ signed in Charleston County
by Judge DeVorc is not b.ndiug on
Sheriff Martin—or rather, Deputy
Poulr.ot, and Judge DeVorc has ro
right to Instruct me^to turn th^ee
men loose or toHiold them or to do
anything else with them, and has no
right to Instruct Mr. Poulnot.
“As to the papers from Governor
Sulzer’s office, they are perfect; they
lan’t be attacked. Now, the only
thing 1 have to Inquire into ia, has
a critne been committed in the state
of XehyYork under the laws of New
York, athj, next, whether the parties
before me are probably guilty of tHot-
crime. If so. it is my duty to grant

and personal feelings have absolute

do grant, this requisition this man
here, the agent of the State of

it that way and I do not believe it is

do not propose for technicalities or
trickeries to control in my office. The
rcsuisltion will be granted. They are

out of your hands. Mr Sheriff. Mr
