Now, it must be admitted that tbe election system is faulty, that it Is diseased to the very core, and that It is hard to conduct an honest election under the present rules. very wise changes could be madl la the system, among them be- tag, closing ef club rolls earlier and their publlcatlaa before tbe elec tion, allowing a man to be on only one slab roll, paying tbe cost of pri mary elections by the State, aad such thlaffs. THR PRIMARV KLEtTION REN TON. ..n »;u:rc<! lo- thin !inp. we Since the appoarAwce of our edito rial last irrHt -wa -the corruption la the recent primary election, many ritisOna bare commended tbe stand we iook t and tbe only criUclsm we have beard took the poeltion that we did not go far enoufb. We have been naked why we did not demand a few prosecutions for the open viola tion 1 of election laws. The answer to this la easy. It Is well known that convictions for these things are al most Impoaaibla. It Is too hard to secure the heceaaary evidence which the court demands. Then, too. many meg have baan bsard to excuse the \atlilng of their votes ou the ground that the time they lost to go to tbe polls was paid for, and not tbe vote. Therefore, we take the position that prosecutions would be useless. Tbe main (iuestioh. though, is still before us, vis: whs. will be the result in the future? Is bribery to continue? Are votes to be put under the hammer and sold? Will those who secure offices be those who are able to buy them in the open marketf Will our elections represent the will t of the people? What ‘Twill we do about- it? Newspapers all over the State have carried editorials lamenting the corruption in the First Coa- gressional District, and predicting that the methods used in the First Ihstrict election will Rpr*'iUl^|to Mm* rest of the State. Many Mdutio:.* b*ive be* n sogge.^ted, but the one upon which the. papers tsko their . strongest stand is that registration certificates should 1»C the primary. Along ? print elsewhere in this Ifsm* several * pres* vernments. While agreeing that the present election system is faulty to the * ore, and while"hoping that something v. ill be done to corre* t the evils which now exist before Mie next primary floe tion. we cannot now favor regis tration certificate* for the primary. We still have confidence in the s^Vite people of the State to redeem theni- •el es at the polls amt believe that there are enough left whom money cannot buy to bring about the nec* s- wary pure elections without such drastic requirements Th** primary system in this State was brought about to unite the white voters on one candidate for every office, and it was designed in order that every white men might have the riau* t-j vote. For ignorance we have no ex cuse and offer none, but we do be lieve that our people have not shown themselves entirely unable to pick the (jest men for office. Tluf let’s consider the registration requirement. All know that the present system of- registration is a farce; that ovary white man can get a registration certificate if he will only send or vrite for it. Then, would registration as it now exit's problem? Would if not. without yielding a solution, only make it a Utile more trouble to vote? The primary registration argument in order to secure better juries to trj cases in court might be aoutut, but we cannot see how this would in any way affect the primary question, unless it were in the larger «(tin. excuse it, ana who ] place honor above everything, aaen who will take up tbe problem of pure elections and aianly flght that suih may be be brought about Are you one of them? If not,' resolve from hence forward to be—if so, go deeper into the fight; your State needs you. ML Consol Note*. N r . Mt. Carmel.
