Many were surprised last week
when the returns from the election
showed that neither ot the Colleton
men had succeeded in getting in the
second race. Out people had expect
ed that one of them would have the
opportunity of running in the second
primary, and it seemed that Colle
ton would have a Congressman. But
not so. The Charleston men were
too strong.
Now. there are two Charleston men
in the race, and much is being done
to secure votes of the Colleton peo
ple by these two men. Colleton has
become the battle ground of the dis
trict. and every energy la being bent
to secure a good lead in this county
for oae of tbe candidates.
Since the first election, we have
been asked by both sides to speak
editorially in behalf of their candi
date. In spite of our policy of
"bauds off" in politics, we have beeu
asked to take a aide. This we have
refused U> do. There are two men
before the people, as able as the
district affords, and either of them
woqld make a good Congressman.
Therefore, we do not see it to be our
duty to fight the battles of either of
them. The district will be well rep-
retenteej. it matters not w hich * is
elected ^Therefore ojr appeal to
th« voters is not to support either
not- of them, hut to study the two
men. (^attempt to find what each
