Express Company Refuse* to Deliver
Whiskey Shlpaseata.
Greenville, March 7.—Special:
Acting on orders from headquarters
the?local agent of the Southern Ex
press Company today refused to de
liver whiskey shipments to any per
son whomsoever, whether for per
sonal oss or not. declaring the Webb
>111 is of this offset. Following this
action several citizen!' prevailed
upon Col C. S. Webb, of Greenville,
brother of Congressman Webb, au
thor of the bill, to wire the Represen
tative at Washington for his opinioq
as to the infest of tbs bill, receiving
late today the following reply:
‘'Washington. D. C.. March 7. 1»13.
C. 8. Webb. Greenville: Law doss not
prohibit private oss shipments and
will not unless State forbids It. and
Stats cannot where it allows sals to
Individuals by any one in the State.
(Signed) “E. Y. Webb."
Senator E. D. Smith also answered
a request for information, giving an
opinion similar to Congressman
Webb.
Agent Hill, of the Express Com
pany, stated that several persons
showed him letters from whiskey
houses acknowledging receipt of or
ders, but stating that the purchasers
would be usble to get the whiskey,
the houses taking the same view of
the bill as the Southern Express
Company.
The general opinion here is that
.the Express Company is taking this
method to test the validity of the
law. ' *

from the Alum Chine’s hold several
minutes before the explosion occur
red. ,/-•
At a late hour tonight the bodies of
twenty dead‘had been brought to
mprguOs to this city* and sixty in
jured were in the hospitals. Esti
mates of the dead included thirty ste
vedores and checkers of the Joseph
R. Foard Co., employed in transfer
ring dynamite from a barge to the
Alum Chine.Nyhich was bound for
Panama; eight members of the crew
of the Alum Chine:Nflx men on the
collier Jason, and the captain and
several members of the chew of the
tug Atlantic. Many bodies. tU is be
lieved, never will be recovered from
the icy waters. *8
Of the injured a score are fright
fully maimed. At least fifteen are
expected ta die.
Meati$ed Dead.
Tonight nine of the dead have
been identified a sfollows:
Capt. William E. Van Dyke. Bal
timore. of the tug Atlantic.
Robert W. Driggs. first mate, tug
Atlantic. Baltimore.
Erward Watters, chelf officer <,of
the Alum Chine.
Joseph P. Lennon. Baltimore. At
lantic crew.
John Mackral. Frank Doyle. Ed
ward Cassell. Andrew Carotski. Jo
seph T. Hood, stevedores, ail of Bgl-
| timore.
Seamen in small craft and Capt
Van Dyke, of the Atlantic, saw smoke
coming from the dynamite-laden*
Alum Chine a few minutes before the
explosion/ The launch Jerome was
alongside the ship and rescued many
members of the crew- and rushed
them to safety. The witnesses say
that when the explosion came the
steamer jumped from the water as
i^a torpedo had struck her and Hum
fell to fragments. In which were min
gled the torn bodies of the dead.
The transport company's scrow had
been moored to the big steamer and
the concussion fro mthe ship's hold
blew up the tons of dynamite still
aboard the barge in an^echoing ex
plosion that increased the carnage
and dewtruction. Several small
craft in the barber are believed to
have been blown to pieces..
Fate of the Atlantic.
The tug Atlantic, which had twice
rushed into the res«'ue before the
crash, was racing away when it was
caugbt in the rain oi charred wood,
hot steel, and ur.exploded boxes of
dynamite that fell ,n a shower for a
quarter of a mile around, killing some
of the crew outright and settitrg fire
to the vessel.
Coming up the river at the time
was the tug Britannia and she rushed
to the aid of the Atlantic, picking
up many of the wounded who had
leaped into the water. Some of them
are. said to have perished before the
Brttania could get to them.
