they not? Walterboro :s a good
town and a growing iOwn t and has
some mighty good folks in it, but
they need to awake from their Rip
Van Winkle sleep and get to doing
things—public things we <*-
One of the things hard to compre
hend is why the people of the town
will not attend a meeting such as
that given Tuesday night at the
Court House, when Supervisor
Tate delivered a most instructive and
entertaining lecture oa the school
conditions in South Carolina. Sure
ly the absence of nearly all of the
local teachers, of eveiy memrvv of
the local board of trustees of every
member of town council, and of .*5
per cent, or more, of the patrons of
the town cannot be traced to indif
ference—yet they were ,absent-
why? They would have seen enter
tained, instructed and enthused.
How can Walterboro lead education

There Is much to be commeaded in
the way Magistrate -Houston Towles,
of Oreea Poad. has cleared up a
tough jolat at that place, eepeclally
as regards the Illicit able of liquor.

situation and many gallons of the
stuff that bad been purchased for
the thirsty, was poured into tho

Not only has ..Magistrate Towles
stopped the Illicit sale of liquor but
he has broken up the pernicious
habit of negroes who were accustom
ed to loafing round the depot at
Green Pond. Charges of vagrancy,
under the vagrancy laws of the State,
Nvere preferred upon the worst of
fenders. and only a few days ago
eight prisoners were - sent to the
county chain gang to serve terms for
this offense. It is said that the qual
ity and quantity of laoor in this sec
tion has been greatly improved and
increased, and drunkenness is almost
unknown.

tended all along that the sheriff and
the magiatmtes of tL^- county could
stamp out (he illicit sale or liquor if

not a sec tion of the county where the

the people of the county and town
ships have elected men who have
backbone, and who do not need ner

WALTERBORO NEEDS BOOSTING.
What is it that makes one man
succeed and another fail? we have
seen two men go into business to
gether as partners and in a few
years one amasses a conaiderable
fortune and the other barely man
ages to keep body and soul togeth
er. What quality it it that brings
success to the one and failure to the
other? Two men open business in
adjoining stores with equal capital.
One forges ahead and success crowns
his efforts; the other goes to the
wall * Location or ravors did not
make the one succeed and the other
fail. Fh^n what was it? Two
farmers, brothers, are given equal
portions of the old homestead, and
settle down to make homes. The
one succeeds and gruws weil-to-do;
the other gets behind and is counted
a failure. Why is it?
A young man goes into a commun
ity penniless and soon gains a foot
hold and prominence, while dozens
of the "home boys” are marked fail
ures. Why is this? There must
be some reason. is It due to the
lersoual magnetism"of the^ne and
the lack of It by the others, and if
so what is this personal magnetism?
Is it some quality tha: can be culti
vated? Is It due vto a stricter
-tense of honor and honesty that some
men succeed where orners fall? Per
haps. Then why uot all men
who are honorable and honest suc
ceed. U it luck?
Certain it Is that some men suc
ceed and others fail under almost
identical circumstances. Tben it
would seem to be a proper course

Driving along the public roads one
is struck by the various methods be-
'ng used to prepare land for cultiva-
tiorfT It seems strange that some
uniform method cannot be hit upon
which will best suit conditions. For
instance one man is breaking bis land
with a two-horse plow, going as deep
as he tan. and turning under every
bit of vegetation on tne land. An
other has picked up every piece of
corn stalk and is turning his land
two or three inches deep with one
horse. One farmer breaks all his
land broadcast; anotber follows the
old rows going only «wo or three
times to the row, leaving half the
land unbroken. Seldom do we see
the same method employed by any
two farmers though they be brothers
plowing adjoining fields. r
A little later the same variety of
ways of planting will be observed.
