The presence of a tiger concerns
every man in the commnalty. No
one can escape the responsibility for
Its existence, and a tiger flourishes
because the people desire It. This
Is s terrible arraignment to bring
against any community, but wa defy
contradiction. If It Is not so then
why Is the tiger~hllowed to live?
The Press and Standard calls for a
crusade of extermination. It must
be done and It can be done.
THANKSGIVING DAY.
Tomorrow Is Thanksgiving day.
Following a custom inaugurated by
' the Pilgrim fathers nearly three hun
dred years ago when their new home
was a bleak and cheerless prospect,
with the prowling savage as neigh
bor, with waut and suffering ahead
of them, but with a sturdy manhood
• which gloridd in the thought that
they were free—free from the re
straints of customs which found them
in slavery—free to worship God ac
cording to the dictates of their con
science and to train their children
In the ways of freedom. These were
the tblngirfippermost in the minds of
those early settlers on the bleak New
England chore..
The custom has lived, ana our peo
ple, now grown marvelously great
and powerful, still observe as a Na
tional holiday this annual Thanks
giving day. Tomorrow all business
will ceye and we shall pause a brief
while to count over our blessings,
and to renew our faith In (he future.
But grill our people morn as sincere
thanks as did the pioneer Pilgrim
eettiers? Have we felt the need of
freedom as they felt It? Have we
not overcome the feeling of depend-

and order, the conditions In Waiter-
boro and Colleton county are dee
ps rate, and it Is very necessary that
desperate remedies be used to Im
prove them. Especially Is this true
with reference to the violation of
the prohibition law. We are told
that almost every section of the coun
ty tigers no longer blind are devour
ing those who come their way. This
n Itself is terrible enough, but .the
mere waste of money and health is
not all the presence of the tiger en
tails upon a community. There are
other effects equally bad. Labor Is
demoralfumL and crimes fostered.
Murders lie committed with no pro
vocation. Just ten days ago at Oredi

Other crimes follow this violation if
law, not the least of which in lying

protect him and he usually does.
Men of Colleton, thee# conditions
prevail. What are you going to do
about it? Is it none of your busi
ness to put a stop to it? Let us sm
You are living near a tiger’s lair. He
sells Ijquor—vile stuff it usually ig
—to your labor. Saturday night and
Sunday he is on a drunken frolic,
and docs not sleep off the effects of
his debauch till noon Monday, and
then he Is worthless, lb,is fortunate
if he doee not commit some crime in
the mean while. Doesn't this come
home to you?
But this is not all. Your sou, S a
lad still In his teens goes out to visit
a friend. They pass the tigd^'s lair,
and buy a bottle of his stuff^ and
your boy is made drunk. "Not e«y
boy." you say. Well perhaps your
boy has not fallen yet—It is onjy
your neighbor's son. But wbst as
surance have you that your boy \\itl
not be the next? Somebody’s boy
will be and why not yours? No ret
son wrfy he should t>e spared. The
user Is fife respecter of persons. Have
