and collections has at length found
the ear linot-known spec miens of the
old leather-mounted type of the six
teenth Cent dry: These are now to
be seen In tho Plrkhe:mcr room in
tho Wart burg (near Eisenach, Thur
ingia.) and were discovered behind
the wooden wainscoating of Willi-
hald/Pirkheimer’s chainoer at Nur
emberg in 1867. Pirkholmor’s spec
tacles consist of eight pairs, the len
ses mostly sprung or broken, and
clouded through some changes In
the glass. ^ Tho eyegtosses of this
period were called “nose-riders” be
cause the straddled the nose and had
to be supported by the hand from the
