The last campaign meeting was
held Aaturdey -at Walterboro
eery Urge crowd wrgg present, the
number being variously estimated at
from twelve to fifteen hundred
voters, besides a number of ladies.
The speaking was held at the stand
erected for the State campaign
party. The day passed off quietly
sod good order prevailed generally.
The receipt of the News and
Courier containing Tillman’s letter
endorsing Ira B. Jones for Governor,
created a profound impression and
was easily the feature of the day.
Immediately upon receipt of tbU
paper. The Press end Standard got
bnsy and published two. thousand
.circulars containing Tlllaun’s let-
tei. These were distributed to
the crowd during the afternoon.
The campaign which closed with
the meeting Saturday has been a
remarkable one In* many respects.
It has been high toned and free
from any personal element. As a
'consequence there are no wounds to
be healed. The question of sup
porting a candidate for Governor
was eliminated from the race en
tirely and this is largely reeponti-
ble perhaps for the good feeling
which characterized the audience
in all there meetings.
The ladies of Walterboro had ar
ranged a picnic dinner which was
enjoyed during an intermission
from !:•* to 2:30 o’clock. This
dinner was spread on picnic tables
erected at the rear of the speaker's
stand and was all that could be ex
pected. A statement had been
made that it was impossible to get
up a picnic dinner at Walterboro,
but through the generalship of Mrs.
D. L. Smith, assisted by a number
of other ladles, s> spread which
would have done credit, even to Cot-
tageville, was provided.
The apeechmaking for the occas
ion was above the ordinary, every
candidate putting forth his best ef
fort before so large an audience.

at court before consenting for

A personal encounter occured also
during the afternoon between G. E.
H. Moore, of Hendersonville, and
Eugeue Griffin, of Stokes. It seems
that this fight was brought about
on account of partisanship in the
goveroor’a race. Mr. Griffin is a
supporter of Blease and Mr. Moore
of Jones. An altercation ensued be
tween them, which resulted in an
epithet from Mr. Griffin which was
resented by Mr. Moore. Friends in
tervened and separated the combat
ants before ar«y serious injuries werl
inflicted.
