WEDNESDAY. JULY 17. 1»12. * If tb« charge# of graft and other wrong doings doo* not ellm- l»at« Coleman Llrlngaton Bloaa* focwver from the political altusr ♦too in South Carolina, then surely Um iLOguage he uaea in bis cam* palftn speeches—as for example the Bamberg speech—will turn the votes of some men who stand for purity in life and cleanllDeea in public speaking. Such language was never be&rd from a governor before, uaid the report of the speech, and even his followers in the audience alunk away and allowed him to elos Bis speech in silence. Such utter ances we a disgrace to the State and an Insult to decency. Surely a man brasen enough to use it. will he rebuked at the polls in no un certain terms. Will Colleton’s vot go to such a black guard f We do not believe it. W flftOVLD KXPREH8 THEMSELVES in always stveu. Thun his rtate- aaouts -arc basked up by docaaea tary •vjftsscs and bp dletagiuph tes timony, laud them Is no getting xouid that. Thu McNamara’s when coafmated by dictagraph testlmeay broke down end contented. Other noted criminals have doc* like wise. So it would seem that tbs character of the testimony is •neb as will compel belief in its truth and genuineness. Then it must be remembered that the witnesses were sworn, and if their statements are fcJse, then a o suit for perjury aod libel will !le, and those testifying are soeable and solvent. Dennuctwions of those making charges prove nothing. If Governor Bleaee la not guilty, let bim place himself where he cart be tried by a court cf Justice, or* if he perfer call together the general assembly in extraordinary seseion. and submit to an impeachment trial. An innocent man med have nothing to fear from such course, and no other would satisfy one who is in nocent Raving and tearing one’s hair and calling everybody names which are nr*printable prove nothing. Tes timony must be met with testimony Meanwhile It is fortunate the voters have had an opportunity to learn of these wholescJe charges of graft end crimes. aM are, there fore, in a position to determine whether or not the present governor is a fit person to receive the votes of intelligent ec-d patriotic citisens. The reasons why a candidate (or the legislature should express hlm- eeif on the race for governor be- eomes more apparerv. every day. A candidate who ia afraid to take oae aide or the other Is not a sc/e man to represent his county iu the general assembly. If he has not Acpt hlmeslf posted on the issues of the campaign, he is not pro gressive; if he has and cannot take 003 side or th« other, ia between Bleaae or Jobm. or rather Bleaee- lam or the opposite, he is not dis criminative enough to act as an arbiter between right and wrong in the making of our lowe. In the light of very recent de velopments, it is highly imperative that those who desire to represent Colleton county should show' their hand. That it would be swinging on to anyone’s coat tails, is too absurd for consideration. Judge Jones stands for certain principles of government; Hleasv for other? In which side are you standing? Where are the principles on which you are making the race? It is reported that the support ers of Ble&te who are candidate* for the legislature are to refuse to ex press themselves on the stump, and that their preference will be known aud word will be sent by “wireless”* to the Bleaae supporters who will give them a solid vote. We do not know if this pita has reached Colleton y«t, or if it will, but it i* being used in other counties, ac cording to report. If the voter la not entitled to know where the candidate stands, then the candidate can hardly feel he is entitled to the ballot of the voter. a. r. wmam mn me xm> enimsan, wiiraaMBtc a n JULY IT. 1111. Oa teoak^Jaly" 1 ftpedal: b If ia wtth mack regret that I an nounce my withdrawal from the fg> for representative. Ter I have been nader the treatment of Dr. Robert Wilson, of Charloeton. Though I did not consult Dr. Wilson until right recently concerning my campaign, he poaltirelp forbade me to make the race. I did not feel like running when.I entered the race, but hoping for better and yield ins to the solicitation of numerous frends, I entered. It has always been my ambition to do something for my county and no matter bow strong my friends may regret my abandonment of the race, they can never regret it as much as I. I cannot herein express my> apprecia tion for the encouragement given ra from all over the county by my friends, and I assure you, fellow elttseds, the* If the opportune time ever comes along my way, I shall offer Colleton county my services. The first time being at St. George, which was quite lively time and the meet ing Saturday bids fair to be al*o quite interesting. COUNTY’ VISITATION DAY. t-'ditoriiil Comment. The editor of The Press and Standard mer-nt to say Just what he said in the issue of July 10. We did not say that “every honorable mar* in Colleton county would vote agauist Governor Hlease md noth ing hut ‘law-breakers and crimin als’ would be for him,’’ We said that by standing fearlessly for what Its editor “feels is best for Colleton county and her people,” we hr-d “trampled or* the toes of a few law-breakers and criminals,” &nd It was they who yelled when th Governor referred to the editor of this paper in his remarks at the campaign speaking. We cannot see how Mr. Herndon can twist that irrfo whe-t he says above. Of course good men are going to vote for Bleass for Governor, even after the exposures of last week in Augusta—the mors is the pity. With them the editor of The Press and Standard h&« no fight. If they see their duty as a voter lh that light, we shall not fall out with them. To vote as he pleases Is the privilege of every voter, and we would not prevent his using such privilege if we could. It seems a little strange thr-t Mr. Herr«don. is the only one of our ] readers who read such a meaning ^ i into our editorial, and we do not believe any of them will allow I him to Incite them by such ce- rtin-rk* to ’’fall out” with the editor of this paper, who numbers its some of his warmest friends strong Bleas supporters. ar<l some of them live at Ruffin, too These friend* do did Mr Herndon. at th Saturday Observed as YUritotkm Day Deftpft9’~V>f Rat*.
