ehaafe of the seasons. He exults
•like la the snow of January and
the first flower of spring. Taking
everything la its turn he finds
(as the CresAor intended) all very
good*
Boch natural feelltgs and inter
ests of the child convey a hint.
They are an invaluable means of
broadening his life and enriching
his personality^ The wise teacher
will cherish and cultivate them by
all means.
There la a two-fold reason for at
tention to nature and nature-study
in the school-room: first, to
awakec* in the tlm minds of our
children the poetkrsense, oftentimes
dormant, but never, perhaps, even
in the case of the dullest, "wholly
lacking. • And. accord, by carefully
planned nature lessons, though
merely oral and comparatively de-
fultory, we may sow the seeds
which shall develop lator on in
the boys or girl’s devotion to some
scientific interest. I know l young
Charlestonian who is today quite
an authority on birds. His interest
In this subject dates back to his
not very far distaU school days
when c teacher he loved used to
talk to her pupils about birds, and
encouragb them to notice the differ
ent species that they saw around
end their haibtts.
It is a good practice to take a
few minutes occasionally/o call the
attention of the children to what
Is going on f'bout them in tbart
vast realm of Mother Nature where
nothing is small or .Insignificant. To
encourage them to watch for the
ecrliest snowdrop or L-ercissus in
February, to go abroad for Jessa
mines and crab-apple blossoms to
make their school room sweet and
becutiful; to note the first sound
of the whippoorwill in spring. Snch
things have a wonderfully refining
and ennobling influence. They ex
clude lower and baser pleasures.
Th*y are in a high degree, educa
tive.
It has been found in some pr-rts
of our State that children- take a
great deal of Interest In a school

It is worth all we can do,
the best we cat* do.

Miss Dixie Robertson, of Virginia,
