We should “live at bome,’' of
course, but merely to make enough
to exist at home Is not enough.
The Southern frrmer car> make mon
ej* growing corn and stock, as West
ern farmers do. and can thereby
acquire the comfort# that they en
joy. The old Idea of considering
cotton mr-klng the farmer's supreme
''purpose in life, and all other crops
a* mere “supplies,’' la what has
brought us to our present deplor
able Plight. Cottor hag been King
indeed, Hie cotton farmer ct n make

vant. And this can be done only
by adopting a thoroughgoing sys
tem of diversified farming—not
merely “supplies^ to enable the
farmer to live at home, but proflt-
r-ble money crops and stock raising
to enable him to have ajl the com-
forta and conveniences that farmers
in other sections enjoy.
Old Aesop has a fr-ble which
comes appropriately to mtr.<d Just
hera:
"A poor Msn, who longed to get
rich, used to pray day and night for
wealth, to a Wooden Idol which he
had In bis house. Notwithstanding
s-U hla prayers. Instead of becoming
richer he got poorer. Out of all pa
tience with hla Idol, he one day took
It by the legs and daahed It to piec
es upon the floor. Hundreds of gold
pieces, which had beei< hidden in
the body, flew c-bout the room.
Transported st the sight, he exclaim
ed: *How have I wasted my time
in worshiping a gracious dlety, who
yields to force what he would not
grant to prayera’.”
The ff-rmera of the South have
been In much the same condition as
the poor man In the fable. They*
have made themselveg the humble
servile slaves of King Oottot* only
to get poverty for their pains. Now
let them assert their independence
Ciiid have done forever with the idol
worship that has set him up as the
