“Hands off,” is our motto la the
race for Governor. Let Blease and
Jones fight It out.
' llhere has been some whisperings
recently of the erection of a modern
hotel In -Walterboro. We trust
these were not vaporings but tha*
the sctusl work of construction will
begin at an esrly date. *
Of cuoree Governor Blease Is not
afraid of the Issue, If be rod Judge
Jones are the candidates next sum
mer for the Governorship but It wM
be a convenient thing If Senator
Tillman does not run, so that he
may run for the United States Sen
ate.
Instead of being boycotted, the
News and Courier seems to be more
fsvored than the other papers by
the present Governor. During the
pdet week thisp sper ha* carried
two “beats'' from Its Columbia
bureau, one about the race of Col.
W. J. Talbert for the U. 8. Sencte
and tb« other about the Intention
of Governor Blease to run for the
V. S. Senate If Senator Tillman Is
not a candidate.

Editor Knight of the Bamberg
Herald comes In his last week’s
paper with some pretty straight tal
about the lack of support he is
getting from the business men of
the town. He hints thr-t if this
condition does not improve he will
' mdve his plant to some other place.
We have been noticing for a long
time that he has been getting but
little advertising from his home
merchant*, we cat<iot understand
why this Is. He gets out one of the
best and neatest papers published
anywhere In the State, and It la
a credit to Bamberg. But we are
wondering Whether or not such a
public arraignment of the business
men of the town Is a tactful thing
to do. Does Brother Knight “go
out after the business4" Or does
he sit back in his beautifully equip
ped sanctum and wait for it to

The National Farmers’ Union Con
vention held a few days ago at
Shawnee, Okla., advised the farmers
of the South to hold their cotton
for 14 and 15 cents. The confer,
once of planters bankers, business
men, and officials held last week
at Montgomery, Ala., claim that cot’’
ton should bring not less than 15 |
cents and urges farmers to hold
for that figure. So the advice from < Mts at 75 cents, per Bushel,
both these gatherings is to the
farmers to warehouse their cot-
top end market it gradually, thus
forcing the mill man and manufar.
turer to give a living price for the
•taple. „
This is very' good, but we just
rise to remark that such advice will
not do th? farmers of Colleton conn
ty a bit of good. They have not
m warehouse. How tong Will they
be content for such a condition- to
exlatf The farmer can if he will.
Will he?
