The following account of an ex

attired 3t. George. U taker.- from
the Dorchester Eagle of la*t week:
The people of 8t. George were
startled and thrown Into a state
Jt Intense excitement Tuesday night
when an attempt of brutal and
criminal assault was made upon a
well known and respected white
woman of this town. As the law
forbids, we are unrhle to give the
of the person upon whom
the attack was made.
It was about 10:.TO o'elock Tues
day night when neighbors were at
tracted by the screams of some one
in distress. The residence where
the attack was made is in the heart
of the town Just one blocH from
Main street and near the new
school buildii g It required only a
few moments to attract assistance
and Immediately an organlied
*• search was begun for the assailant
At 10:30 o clock, a rather early
hour for such a crime to be „ at

town, a man entered the bed room
of the victim, who was asleep, as

Being awakened by feeling some
one clutching at her throaty the
lady endeavored to scream, in
der to give the alarm and frighten

sevetw) blows were struck her in
the mouth and face, bringing blood
ard painful wounds.
Fearing that the noise had been
heard ^ others and that he was
in danger* the negro fled, jumping
out of a window.
The little boy was awakened and
his screams soon brought help at-

be brought to the scene.
The cries of distress were heard
in ail directions and the situatioi
was indeed critical.
CHt-ton Glover, a negro about 1 ^
years of age, a stranger about on
yoar ago from Willlston. was seer
hanging around the premises wher-
the assault was a'teinpted. sev
eral hours that day and his action
about the place aroused suspicion
A search was made by the Sherif f
and others and he was found at
his home some dlstar-.-e from th
scene of the trouble. He denied
knowing anything concerning the
affair but was carried to the coun
ty Jail and locked up, p-nding th«
arrival of the blood hounds.

The work of clayic-g Main street

about fifteen teams hauling clay. <
Over a hunderd yards were clayed !

will be carried on till the entire

entire street, as the part between !.
the Brick store and the Episcopal

The proposed route is down the
street to the Episcopal church, and
