Walterboro Is getting to be a ver
center of pugnacity.—Charleston
Evening Post.
IjET there be peace.
Hats off to Editor Smoak and
Foreman Grave* for upholding the
pugilistic reputation of "the preM."
—Summerville New*.
We have besrd the remark sev-
enul time* that The Prewt and
9
Standard force were flr-iHl, say ten
or fifteen dollars worth for fight
ing and thirty-five or forty dollar*
for writing about It. Thn-t la one
way to account for the amount of
these fine*
We desire to commend the In
creased interest In education one
sees over the county. Trustees are
getting ready for the next school
term, and are trying In many of
the districts to get an Increased
amount of funds with which to run
tbelr schools. Several districts have
already? voted special levies for
this purpose, n-nd several more are
contemplating this move.
The sympathy of the newspaper
fra4ernlty over the State will go
out to Editor Aull of the Newberry
Herald and News on account of the
death of his wife which occured Fri
day at their home in Newberry of
typhdld fever. Mrs. Aull was a
charming lady and was popular
with the members of the Fourth
Estate who will miss her on their
aaaual gatherings.
These days owe ’ ears much of
the qppbtlon of universal peace, and
the disarmament of nation*. In this
question we are as much concern
ed, perhaps, as aay people aa the
globe, as a nation. But what we
need aa a community Is peace at
home. There are getting to be
entirely too many breaches of peace
In Walterboro aad Colleton county?,
between the cltixens. Such private
warfare docs not do our town or
county angr good, and tends to sir*
a black eye to our community. Let
us advise peace, gentlemen. Try
to settle your differeocea amicably
and avoid the appeal to brute force.
Nothing Is gained by such course.
True there are times when men
have to fight to protect their hon
or themselves against attack. Wal
terboro has had too much of this
sort of thing recently and It is
time to call a halt. I^>t there be
peace.

The highest duty of an editor is
to battle with wrong. This, of
course, brings him in conflict with
wrong-doers, and they are apt to
show their spite In vbriou* ways
It is quite common fo the thin-
skinned or wounded to rush into
the office ard shout "stop my pa
per!" This class is pointedly shown
up in the following fashion: A
w
certain man hit hia toe against
a pebble, and fell headlong to the
ground. He was vexed, and un
der Influence of anger and self-suf
ficiency? he kicked mother earth
right saucily. With imperturable
gravity, he looked to see the earth
Itself dissolved and come to naught
but the earth remained, and only
hia poor foot was injured in the en
counter. This is the way of man.
An article In the newspaper touches
him In a weak spot, and forthwith
he eerda to "stop his paper.!' With
great complacency he looks to see
the crash, when he finds he only
hit his toe against the world that
does not perpetually feel the shock,
and Injures no one but himself.
No sensible editor expects to
please everybody. Such an editor
lays no claim to Infallibility?, and
may at times even fall into error.
But an outspoken, independent
journal, aiming to support the
right and attack the wrong, Is such
a power for good in ar<y community
that well-balanced minds will look
over little faults In view of the
great benefit conferred. An editor
who Is afraid
lie questions for fear of offending
somebody, may have an easy time
of It; but he will never amount to
much as a leader of opinion.
Thoughtful people wfll geiserally
