MAR. 8.1911 The criminal doket for Walter- boro tkio term of I court is lighter tban it has beenYor years. It is a little remarkable that the ' business el the counrt of * General Sessions should be concluded in only four days as will most likely be the case this week. There must be some sauae for this. We attribute it largely to two causes. In the first place the voting out the dispensary removes a lot of liquor which produces more. In the second place, we have an able and fearle** solicitor who has been remarkably successful in his prosecutions. We are very glad to see Ibis healthy moral tone. We found true 1 ills against all indictments handed to us by the solicitor. , 2 The committee appointed to examine the jail find the same in miserable condition. We find the roof leaky and that it it badly in need of inner repair, and that the water works are in a sheckingly bad state of repair. We also find that the mattresses are not fit tor inmates to sleep on and do earnestly recommend that new ones be supplied immediately. Supervisor Griffin baa promised to see to it that these these things are attended to atan early date although he has ignored the former present ments along this line. 3. The committee on poor farm find the same in very good condition, it being clean and neat and the three j inmates well cared for. We found “What the Works are to a. Several days ago a gentleman same to Walterboro and to other sections of the county on a very worthy errand. V He was soliciting funds for.i one L of the colleges fer Women in« 1 Columbia, a Methodist college. He was remarka- ly successful, due largely to hia splendid personality, and the worthy eauae be represents. As a result of Ms visit the College is a great many hundred dollars better off. We bate not board how much he ■•cured, but we presume not leas Man $8,000 nil told from this county, hi addition to a similar amount given a year or two ago to hie predeeesKMr. This la all very good, and our peo ple ere to be commended for their Bbernlity. But era they exactly eenaAstent in this matter? Do theee contributors feel that there nra not several worthy inatitutiooe of learn* tag at home that also need their Iheral contributions? Withaachool term in many of the schools of the eounty of leas than 100 days; with Me rudest and moat meagre equip ment in these schools; with no school ta the eounty an well equipped m it Mould be, ie there not reason for aome contributions to theee home institutions of learning? The Wal terboro High school needed a piano. It has been purchased on a credit and is not yet paid for. Will not some of the contributors to Columbia College in town open their purse strings and donate $25 to this worthy purpose? Some of them gave as much to the Columbia school. If you cannot give $25 give $5. Many persons gave the Columbia College a $5 contribution. Walterboro school, Cottageville school. Hendersonville school, and every school in the county needs a good library. $2,000 properly ex pended would put many very much seeded volumes on the shelves of these schools. Will the contributors to Columbia College be consistent •nd give an equal amount to these home schools whose needs are per haps as pressing as are those of the Columbia College? The columns of The Press and Standard are open tq record all such contributions.
