WEDNESDAY. MAR. 8.1911
The criminal doket for Walter-
boro tkio term of I court is lighter
tban it has beenYor years. It is a
little remarkable that the ' business
el the counrt of * General Sessions
should be concluded in only four
days as will most likely be the case
this week. There must be some
sauae for this. We attribute it
largely to two causes. In the first
place the voting out the dispensary
removes a lot of liquor which
produces more. In the second
place, we have an able and fearle**
solicitor who has been remarkably
successful in his prosecutions. We
are very glad to see Ibis healthy
moral tone.

hia honor Judge Gary, presiding

1. We found true 1 ills against all
indictments handed to us by the
solicitor.
, 2 The committee appointed to
examine the jail find the same in
miserable condition. We find the
roof leaky and that it it badly in
need of inner repair, and that the
water works are in a sheckingly bad
state of repair.
We also find that the mattresses
are not fit tor inmates to sleep on
and do earnestly recommend that
new ones be supplied immediately.
Supervisor Griffin baa promised to
see to it that these these things are
attended to atan early date although
he has ignored the former present
ments along this line.
3. The committee on poor farm
find the same in very good condition,
it being clean and neat and the three j
inmates well cared for. We found

being run on an economical basis.
4. The committee on chain gang
found the same in good shape and
doing good work. And find that all
of the stock is well fed and properly
cared for. We report bridge at
Jones Swamp in bad order; the
boards being loose and no balustrade'
around it although it is nearly
seventy-fivefeet long. We recom
mend that this be looked after at
once.
5. We find the roads in general
bad order, barely travelable in many
places; also we find that aome people
are building wire fences so cioee to
the road and almost plowing in the

on such places. We recommend that

Supervisor Griffin commenting on
the presentment to a representative
of The Press and Standard 'fetates
that the sheriff had never complain
ed to him about the condition of the
jail, and that the condition of the
roads would have been better if he
had been allowed to use the chain
gang over the county. The road
working funds, he stated, had been
cut down by three week* extra court
about $3,000; by re indexing the
records about $2,000. and by the
purchase of mules and machinery.
