FERTILIZING WITH COHON SEED
MEAL
(By Dr. A. MJ Soule of Georgia
Agricultural College.)
Cotton seed meal provides a most
desirable form of organic nitrogen
for farm and garden crops. The
nitrogen in the meal is not in as
quickly available form as in some
other materials, but it is a decided
advantage to supply a part of
Mfe. because an application of nitrat*
of anda in the form of a too dreaiac
will enable the ctop' to receive the
additional nitrofen needed at a time
it can utilise it to the beat
and when there is no
danger of its lost through washing
nod leaching. The cotton seed meal
in the meantime has been put in the
■oil where it will become relatively
•lowly avai able and will tend to sup
ply the needs of the crop
nitrogen through a comparatively
long growing season.
Cotton seed meal also has the ad
vantage of carry iffg from 2 to 2f>per
cent of phosphoric acid and from 1
to 15 per cent of potash. It is not
a complete fertilizer in the sense of
*being balanced in the essential ele
ments it provides lor crop nutrition,
but it can lie easily improved
through the use of acid phosphate
and muriate of pdtash. It has the
great advantage of mixing with
these materials without the slightest
injury since no objectionable chemi
cal reactions occur.
One may easily secure a fertilizer
from high grade cotton seed meal,
16 per cent acid phosphate and high
grade muriate of potash, which will
show a per centage analysis of 1 8
per cent nitrogen. 10 3 per cent
phosphoric acid and f> 6 per cent
potash- a splendid formula to use
under both corn and cotton on clay
or somewhat sandy land. If these
soils an* deficient in nitrogen, or the
crop seems to suffer from lack of
this element, as shown by the yellow
character of tiu* foliage and the
stunted growth, loo [Miunds of
nitrate of soda applied as a top
dressing during the gr w ing season
would firing the per centage of
nitrogen up to 2.03, ihu.> overcom
ing any dvticiency in nitrogen in the
soil and supply mg an essential ele
ment at a a itical time m the life
history of me crop.
In us cotton seed meal could be
most advantageously u>ed as the
source of organic nitrogen, supply-j
mg this eiement in a ^-heap and
efficient form without danger of loss 1
or injury to the soil; and if a crop j
rotation has not been pursued, any |
additional nitrogen cdiild be easily
and cheaply applied through a top |
dressing with nitrate during the
growing season.. On the other hand,
if the farmer were pursuing a pro
per crop rotation so as to supply the
land with even a moderate amount
of vegetable matter, the formula
suggested, which could be prepared
from the exclusive use of cotton

seed meal, acid phosphate and
muriate of potash, would provide a
high grade fertilizer excellently
adapted to meet his needs.
Should it lie desirable l^j£epare a
fertilizer for very sandy lands which
are deficient in potash, the same for

If you want a good, light running form wagon, let
us sell you a White Hickory.
The light running feature of the White Hickory is
one of its excellent points «
You know that horesflesh costs money.
A Whit'.* Hickory wagon is so light running that
this feature is favorably comment'd upon everywhere.
The wheels, the gears, and boxes are made ' •fgood
material and properly ironed..
This excelh nt construction enables them to with
stand the severe usage encountered on the farm and
elsewhere.
White Hickory wagons are so well built, in fact,
that after years of service a farmer still has good words
for his White Hickory wagon. We cai) show you some
White Hickory wagons that have been in use for ten
years and are still being used every day.
If you are not in need of a wagon at present, it will
pay you to investigate the White Hickory and be ready
when the time comes. We guarantee ihe White Hick
ory to be perfect in every respect.

Walterboro Oil Mill
will insure its l>ecoming available
for the sustenance of the plant
through a rather long growing
period. When nitrogen is supplied
from cotton seed meal, it is not so
liable to be lost from leacning as if
secured from other sources, and
this, of course, is a matter of great
importance to the farmer. Organic
nitrogen is relatively more expene-
sivc than that secured in strictly
mineral forms, but for the reason
mentioned, and others which might
be advanced, one can often afford to
pay a little more for it in this form.

way the |>er eent of potasn would be'
raised to a point where it would sup-1

nitrogen and the ease with which it
can be applied separately oy mixed
with other materials are not as fully
appreciated as they should he.
