He was kind hearted, liberal, honest, truthful, broadminded, pious, hand some, and stood at all times for right. He was a Confederate s-ddier and held his comrades in high esteem. He attended the re-union in Charles ton a few years ago; was in the veterans’ parade at the first Colleton County Fair, but last fall he was not able to attend the fair. The election for Probate Judge to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the late Col. Jno. D. Edwards, will be held Friday of this week. There are four can didates, all of whom are well known over the county—Messrs. Grace, Grffin, Hiott and Patter son. They have k handsome building and Pine Grove Church No. 1, is among the leading Baptist churches of our county. “Unde” Ben Benton, as he was generally known, was magistrate of Heyward township for four years; was a member of the Colleton County Pension Board for many years prior and up to his death; he ^waa a charter member of Peniel Local Farmers’ Union. The funeral was held at the resi dence Wednesday morning January 11, at 11:30, in the presence of dun- deeds of relatives and friends. Rev. S. W. Ackerman, of Round conduct ed the funeral services, assisted by Rev. F. O. S. Curtis of Walterboro. Both ministers had been life-long At the close of the services Rev. Mr. Curtis read the will of the deceased brother, which was his request. The remains Jof this Christian gentlemen were laid to rest near the Peniel Methodist church, a spot selected by him some years ago—A few hundred feet from the fence which surrounds the home* planta tion. ^ Mr. Benton was superintendent of Pine Grove Sunday school 13 years, and the good work done by him as superintendent of the Sunday school as well m 50 years deaconship, of the church will ever live. Richard Benton, Virginia, M. Behre will regret to U‘arn that he is not doing as well as usual. He is getting quite feeble, hav ing been suffering for - sometime from nervousness and other dis orders. Mr. Behre is livihg alone at his home on Hampton street and would be glad to hear from hit friends or have them come to see him. Benton, of Walterboro, are the only brothers of the deceased who are living.
