Pale-Faced Women
You ladies, who have pale faces, sallow complexions*
dark circles under eyes, drawn features and tired, worn-
out expressions, you need a tonic
The tonic you need is Cardui, the woman's tonic.
It is the best tonic for women, because its ingredients
are specifically adapted for women’s needs. They act on
the womanly organs and help to give needed strength and
vitality to the worn-out womanly frame.
■ Cardui is a vegetable medicine. It contains no min
erals, no iron, no potassium, no lime, no glycerin, no dan
gerous, or habit-forming drugs of any kind.
It is perfectly harmless and safe, for young and old to use.

*T do not know whether this Mr.
Jefferson Davie is young or old. He
looks both at times. He impremes
ass remarkable kind of man,
but of uncertain temper, and has a
way of taking for granted that every
body agrees with him when he ex-
i opinion, which offends me;
yet he is most agreeable, and has a
peculiarly sweet voice and a winning
of asserting himself. The
fact is, he is the kind of person I
should expect to rescue me from a
mad dog at any risk, but to insist
on a stoical indifference to the
fright afterward. I do not think I
riiall ever Uke him as I do his broth-
Joe. Would you believe it, he is
refined and cultivated, and yet he is

what might have been expected

from different societies throughout
tho South, hut she preferred to re
main independent. In 1908, during
a visit to Canada, aha was seised
with an attack of acute indigestion,
after which she never regained her
former robust health.
She had four children—two sona
and two daughters, of whom, at last
account, only one la still living, Mrs.
J. Addison Hayes of Colorado
Springs. One son was killed during
the war by a fall from a gallery in
Richmond. Another son, Jefferson,

forever enshrined in the heart of
Southern'chivalry as the "Daughter

Mrs. Davis was an able writer, the
contributor to many pacers and
magazines. She assisted her hus

when he wrote his ‘Rise and Fall of
the Confederate Government' it
was she who acted as hia amenuensia.
She died in New York city October
16, 1906, at the Hotel Majestic, of
pneumonia induced by a severe cold
which she had contracted in the
Adirondacks, where she had spent
the summer months. She was nat
urally a woman of superb physique,
and of wonderful bodily and mental
vitality.
