AIVATS n AffAItt. ttohod •vary WadMi at Waltorboro, 8: C. WEDNESDAY. NOV. 30.1910. We desire to extend the fled hand to two recruits to the fraternity. These young men are Editor W. M. Bishop and Associate Editor J. W. Daniel of the Hampton County News. We know these young men possess splendid ability and we look /or big things for the News. of counties. The truth of the mat ter is our young friend has not yet gotten “settled" in his new home, end has not yet been taught the “a b. c." of even recent history in Col leton. We trust he can hr induced to remain with us, but if not. we are sure he can depart without hardship to himself end fulfill the last wish in his article.—"Let m* bones fie any where except in Colleton county."— We refer him to the county superin- tendent of education of Bamberg county—A county in which he can instruct the youth in patriotism for their county and not in alienating the affections of those who. perhaps, are loyal to their mother county, or would be. We should not take him seriously though, for it may be with him a case of “Whose bread I eat His song I sing." Every member of the Fourth Estate in South Carolina, will, we are sure. Congratulate Editor Hart- well N. Ayer and the Florence Daily Times on its magnificent new home. This is described as being pue of the most handsome news paper homes in the State, and it must be if the description fits it. But the Times and its editor deserve all this and more It might be pertinent to inquire of one at least of the circulators of an annexation petition In Warren town ship and who, we are informed, is being paid for his work, what county he hails from. This annexation business should be managed, it ap pears to u.s, by natives. Why this or outside influence? Are the people of Warren township such dolts as to be led around by the nose by a few foreigners, even though they be Kings? IN KK BKOXTON TOWNSHIP. Perhaps the people of Broxton township are biting at the bait Hampton county is dangling in their faces just now. and perhaps they are moL We believe our Broxton friends will realize in this movement a strategic (?) move on the part of Hampton county to recoup betaalf dn account of the great lorn she will feel w|wn Jasper county is formed, etry largely from Hamptonjbarri* tory. bur advice to our gqpd friends in Broxton township (s' to' look before they leap. Annexatjtp to a better county may be allowable under certain conditions, but - to. a % .. worse, never. v/' No. M. W," the present road law has not been in effect in Colleton eounty but nine months, actively in effect, but six. It replaced a law which provided for township over seers who expended in each town ship the funds paid in from that township. If the results are not visible in any township, one rosy fiqd reason for the change. The present road law has demonstrated just what its author wishejd to have demonstrated in Colleton county, and that is that our road building 3 material and forces can be utilized to build just as good roads as can be built in any county in the State, if wisely directed. The results of the present road law will be permanent good roads everywhere in Colleton county, we trust long before M. M. W.’s “bones lie anywhere." HARD ON THE HERALD. The following letter from Mr A W Brabham, in reply Ui a recent edi-‘ torial in the Bamberg Hef^d, in which the Herald insinuated very strongly that Mr Brabham was mistaken, will be of interest to our readers. We also append the Her ald’s editorial comment thereon. Editor Bamberg Herald:—It is rather hard to pass unnoticed . your editorial in regard to my statement in The Press and Standard. I have this statement to make: I can pro duce tax receipts which show that the taxes hfere now are from two to four times as olijgh as we paid to Barnwell count/before the forma tion of Bamberg county. I pa'd taxes for my wife irt“ Colle ton county on six times as much land as I own here and better land, and the taxes on one-sixth of the amount (my own place here) was al most as great as hers. And I have this statement also to make, that each year I am paying higher taxes; and this is true of my near neighbors, and 1 hear complaint on all sides of the advance in taxes. Many good men refuse to vote, on account of the yearly inctease in taxi&, and if a good slice can be ob tained from CoMeton in a year or so, Bamberg will almost be sure to lose all the Salkahatchie valley. Any one doubting any statement I have made, can refer to the records in Bamberg, BarnMell and. Colleton. The Colleton property waa returned by Augustus Verdier in Sheridan township, my own waa returned in Barnwell county from Three-mile township and is thus returned in Bamberg eounty. And I will further add, that no one who knows me well, doubts no atatament I make, while it is a latent fact, that in forming Bam berg county many man of that town made promiaea that they could not mak«good. ‘ w’ AW Brabham. . / ^ m ’ R^y^bJir» ■ v ; % Bazaar!! ; Bazaar!!! W." of Edisto, which is to say the “River" end of Warren totvnship, from the fervor of his remarks in the last issue of The Press and Standard was one of the “land marks" of Colleton, and that he knows somewhat of the history and traditions 0t this oldest god greatest If our good friend, Mr A W Brab ham, will look up the report of the comptroller general he will find that lands are returned 36 cents per acre higher in Bamberg than in BarnwtU, and that Bamberg's levy is one- fourth of one mill higher than Barn well’s. We have not discussed the matter of anybody’s tax receipts for the reason that we don’t know scy thing about them. Our contention was and still is that the official re ports show that there is very little difference in the taxes of Bamberg and Barnwell. As to the valuation of special pieces of property in the different counties, rt is likely that some was returned much lower in one county than the other, hence the difference in the amount of taxes paid. MEETING AT BEJIEA. Quite a number of citizens of War ren township have been in town at* tending court, and are of the opinion tha& the meetings to be held at Berea and Smoaks Tuesday, Dec. 13th, will be largely attended. Ther4 seems to be plenty of interest just now in this proposed annexa tion. and from reports, the number of those favoring the annexation is daily growing less. , The meeting at Berea will be held at 11 o'clock in the morning, and the one at Smoaks 3 o'clock in the after noon.
