Oor boroc was stricken with
sorrow by the death of our deer
Wether. Harry./ which Occured
Friday. November 11. He wait
in the 28th year of his age, and
the son of Mr and Mrs G Alvin
Harvey, formerly of Islandton,
hot now of Daniel's bland.
He was sick only one week in
the Roper hospital. Charleston,
where he died. All that skillea
physicians and loving hands
could was to no avail. His
earthly career is finished, hot his
sweet influence for good and
brotherly advise is fresh in our
memory. He was a dutiful son,
affectionate brother, and loyal
friend. His willing hands were
ever extended to do kind deeds.
It is so hard to give him up, but
God knows best
His remains were laid to rest
in Adnah cemetery in the pres
ence of a host of relatives and
friends.

THE BEAUTIFUL WOMAN.
Dm time was. when women
were considered nothing if not
beautiful It was the first and
most indispensable requisite to
womanly diatinction, and
was deemed womanly
But in these days there is no
longer an invidious emphasis
placed on beauty. Other quali
ties have come to the fore, and
dominate in the social life of the
new America which the march
of progress has evolved out of
the old. The wholeMine, cap
able, intelligent and companion
able woman especially the woman
with a touch of audacity withal—
is now having her
there are no indications
will soon be called upon to ab
dicate in favor of her dollbaby
sister whose only recommenda
tion is that her face is “very
prettily featured.”
In an article on “How to Be
Beautiful,” a celebrated woman
writer says:
'“The ripe, round mellow
years' have lifted the mists of
my life’s morning, and given
me glimpses ot that open secret,
most ineffable and blessed, ’How
to Be Beautiful. ’ It is not in
paints and powders, not in ruf
fles, ribbons or false ringlets,
and not in the use of ’Pear’s
Soap’, or the ‘Balm of a Thous
and Flowers.' For one learns
after awhile that this face and
form we wear about are but a
mask, a thin, almost transparent
veil, through which the spirit
looks, coyly at first, but later on
with calm and steady gaze. Ev
ery seven years the veil must be
renewed: with time come wrink
les where the soul breaks
through, and our whole history
is written in them for those who
have learned to read. What is
behind this changeful face,
moulding and making it forever
new? It is one’s own true self.
Nay, more, the face itself is as
clay in the hands of the potter
to the spirit that lies back of it...
We write our own hieroglyphics
on our own face as plainly as ever
etchings are traced by artists.
Perfect unity with God’s laws
written in our members, obedi
ence to the decalogue of natural
law, and the ritual of this body,
which was meet to be the temple
of the Holy Ghost, ifould have
made us all beautiful fto start
with: would have endowed ua by
inheritance with the fascinating
graces of Hebe and Apollo.
The desire to be beautiful is
instinctive, because we were all
meant to be so, and may all
claim our heritage upon this
spiritual plane, even though so
ruthlessly defrauded of it, on the
materiel plane, by the ignorant
cxceesee of eur ancestors, and
the follies of our own unthought
years. But while I would beg
my clear-headed American girls
to makes special study of the
sacred laws of health, I would
still more urgently impress the
importance of the spiritual law
of beauty upon their sensitive
young hearts..... Behind every
thing there it a thought As a
man thinketh in his heart, so is
he. Expression is the loftiest
and final charm in every human
face. While it is right indeed a
heavenly intuition, to desire
beauty, and while attention to
the laws of hygiene,. good taste
and good behavior mightily con
duce to it heavenly thoughts are
the only sure recipe for a coun
tenance of heavenly expression.
St Cecelia heard the music of
the upper courts, and hence her
face mirrors, its etherial loveli
ness. The ever-welcome, ugly
face of a beautiful soul is vastly
more endeared and endearing to
wistful human eyes than the
classic boom of Eugenie, th£
sparkling eyes of Pattie, or the
statuesque pose of Mary Ander
son.”
A Correction. In my article
of last week the author of .the
question ’’it is the gift of poetry
etc,” should have been given as
Irving, not Hawthorne. This
was a mere inadvertance. which
struck and surprised me when it
met mv eye in print. “A Royal
Poet” is one of the jiapers in
Irving’s “Sketch Book.” ’
