The following comments are taken
from tome of the papers showing
how favorably the candidacy of Col
leton’s candidate for Supreme Court
honors is * iewed outside Colleton.
In addition Mr. Gruber and his
friends are daily in receipt of most
flattering letters of. endorsement
from members of the General As
sembly and others. From all indi
cations Mr. Gruber will have no
trouble in his race.
The Hon. W. B. Gruber of Wal-
terboro is a candidate for Associate
Justice of the Supreme Cburt. Mr.
Gruber’s friends are active in pro
moting his candidacy, and it would
give us pleasure to see such a worthy
man and able lawyer as W. B. Gru
ber placed on the Bench of the Su
preme Court of South Carolina.—

, A SOUTH CAROLINA JUSTICESHIP.
Announcement has been made in
South Carolina of the candidacy of
W. B. Gruber, of Colleton county,
for associate justiceship on the su
preme court bench, one of the offi
ces in the state in which there has,
usually in the past, been considera
tion particularly of the ability of
those aspiring to it.
In this case interest attaches to
the announcement of Mr. Gruber’s
candidacy largely because of his
standing in the bar of the state and
his recognized ability as a lawyer,
in addition to this, he has. recently,
occupied the bench in the lower
court by appointment for the special
terms, and on such occasions has
grown in legal prominence in South
Carolina.
His association and partnership
with such men as the latfe M. P.
Howell, Ashby Farrow and other
prominent South Carolina attorneys,
in both civil and criminal practice,
drew attention to Mr. Gruber
throughout the State some years
ago, and since that time he has be
come a recognized authority in his
profession through his own efforts.
When the legislature convenes.fand
the matter of filling the vacancy is
taken up. Mr. Gruber’s candidacy
is sure to be followed with a deep
interest, particularly in the lower

submitting a change of the Consti
tution of the State to a vote of the
people to have five Judges of the
Supreme Court instead of four; and.
Whereas, we consider the Hon. W.
B. Gruber as a lawyer and a gentle
man thoroughly qualified to fill such
a position, one who will do credit to
the Bar and the Bench of the State;
be it
Resolved, by the members of the
Bar of Cherokee County. That if the
said Constitutional amendment be
adopted by a vote of the people at
the next election, that we do hearti
ly endorse and recommend the name
of th£* Hon. W. B. Gruber to the
Senate and House otf Representa
tives as a proper person to-^fect to
the position of Associate Justice.

At a meeting of the Bar Associa
tion, of Cherokee County, held Wed
nesday afternoon. October 28, in
Gaffney, the following resolutions
ASSOCIATE JUSTICE.
At the general election on the 8th
day of November the electors of
South Carolina will vote upon a pro
posed amendment to the State Con
stitution providing ffl£>an increase
of the number of Associate Justices
of the State Supreme Court, and if
declared in the affiirmative it will
devolve upon the next Gt neral As
sembly to elect an additional Asso
ciate Justice. The Hon. W. B. Gru
ber of Walterboro, is a candidate
for the position. Mr. Gruber is
well fitted for the duties of the of
fice. being a gentleman of unspotted
character, learned in the law. and
several times having presided as
special judge in courts in tne upper
part of the State, with credit to
himself and to the satisfaction of the
members of the bar. In making a
selection the members of the Gene- 1
ral Assembly should take into con
sideration, in addition to the quali
fications of the candidate, the sec
tion in which he lives. The present
Chief Justice and three Associate
Justices all reside in the upper part
of the State, and for the convenience
of the members of the bar and
others who may have business with
the Justice at chambeis at least one
of the Justices should reside in the
lower section of the State, tonsider-
ing the character and ability of the
man, and the section from which he
comes, the legislsture will make no
mistake in placing the ermine upon
the shoulders of the Hon. W B.

Varnville. These people made our
home jolly for the time being.

Now, while we have so many
pleasant occur ranees to make us
happy in life, things ^present
themselves which tend to make us
feel that life is the battle ground for
the victory to be won if we enjoy
the home, sweet home, beyond the
Sr., stars. It is sad, but I mu.-l tell you
that on Sunday, the 16th of this
month, Mrs. Laura Mrors. in com
pany with her husband, and her
daughter-in law, Mrs. Gtnrge Mears,
was on her way to W**sley cemetery
to place flowers on the grave of her
son, when suddenly she said every
thing looked black and fell forward
dead in the buggy. She was buried
Monday following by the side of her
son. Her gr^e was covered with
beautiful fl^Lvers—those she had
prepared for her son’s grave the day
before, were placed there by other
hands. She was a noble Christian
lady—a member of th<» Christian
church at Rice Patch. To know her
was to love her, and so oft are we
i
reminded of: Be ye also ready, the
summons may come at any hour.
