I trill write a few lines to let the world at large know that we are not asleep. Burinea has been on a boom here thin fall; the crops are very fine and the farm ers around here are proeperoos and happy. It is getting quite common to find corn in this neighborhood, making 100 bushels per acre and we have cotton right here inside the town limits that will make two boles to the acre to say nothing of the cotton out on the farms. In fact, this is the garden spot of the county. We have had three cotton buyers this season and the prices paid for the fleecy staple have compared favorably with prices paid anywhere else in the State. There are two up- to-date ginneries operated here and they are both kept busy. During the past year there have been four new stores started here and there seems to be plenty of business for all. If we only had a railroad, our cup would of course, be running over for then 1 am. very sure the county seat would be'ihoved to Cot tageville. The Cottageville Literary Society at its last meeting held a very inter esting Moot Court. C. A. Acker man was tried for breach of the peace and raising a riot. J H (one acted as judge and M. Bishop a? solicitor. The case was hotly con tested on both sides. However, the prosecution carried the day, the jury bringing in a verdict af guilty ihs judge said that as the case was so plain, he would make an exampk of the prisoner by giving him the heaviest sentence possible so he sentenced him to live for the period m one year in the town of Walter boro, whereupon C. T. Reeves, coun sel for the defence, very promptly gave notice of appeal, on the ground that tbe Constitution forbids cruel —- lor unusual punishment. Shoes andjlosiery for Men and Women THE CLOTHING STORE Columbia, October 25.—Special: Two townships in Colleton County wish to be annexed to Charleston County, according to a petition pre sented to Governor Ansel today. A delegation of dtixens from Colleton County presented the petition to the Governor. The two townships are: Adams Run and Collins. The following are recommended for the commissionora to be appoint ed by the Governor: D. H. Towles and John W. Geraty. as thoss favor ing the annexation. One of the delegatee stated today that nine' out of ten people in the territory pro posed to be annexed are in favor of the knnexation, and that there will be no trouble about securing the number of votes when the matter is put before the people in an election. The boundaries of the proposed territory that would be annexed to Charleston County is: Starting at a point on Rantowles Creek, where the Dorchester and Colleton lines come together, west to the Edisto River, then .south the Edisto to a point where Charleston and Colleton County lines meet; thence east along tlie line between Charleston and Colleton to Wadmalaw, thence north along the Rantowles Creek to the beginning point. The population of Colleton County is ^‘1,4110. The population of the two townships is: Adams Run, 4,966; Collins. 7.5 The area of Colleton is 1.350 square miles, and by the con stitutional requirements more than 500 square miles will be Ief|t should the two townships be removed from Colleton. // The property assessed in Colleton is $4,931,495. The Adams Run pro perty is assessed at $1,084,760, and Collins at $69,300. Should the two townships be annexed to Charleston, there would be left in Colleton the $2.n00,000 (and more) asse sed pro perty. necessary under the Constitu tion of this State. One of the delegates stated today that the reason the two townships want to get into Charleston is that the people from there do all their trading in Charleston. “It would be more convenient for us," he said. The delegation appearing here to day consists of the following: Jne. W. Geraty. W. F. Carr. F. E. Towles and D. U. Towles, of Meggetts, Young’s Island. Edwin R.
