THE LYCEUM.
The lyceum attractions should be
attended this season by every person
in town, and in the surroundirg
country. Lyceums are, perhaps,
the most educational of the many
attractions that travel over the
country for the purpose of enter
taining the people. So beneficial
are they that there is hardly a town
p
of any sice in this Stajy without its
course evt-ry season. In fact many
of the country communities remote
from towns have a course, and find
It most delightful.
The Walterboro course is to be
run this year in connection with the
ool and the attractions will ap-
pear in the handsome new auditori
um of*the school building.' Thia
will make them especially attractive,
and every person, in town should
secure tickets.' Not only should
those living in town attend, but
those within a radius of ten or
twelve miles can easily drive in and
enjoy an evening occasionally. In
this way the monotony of life in the
country can be broken, and some
new ideas and thoughts can ied back
home. This should especially ap
peal to the schools and teachers near
town. Walterboro will be glad to
welcome all who wish to attend the
aeries of entertainments to be given
this season.

RALPH BINGHAM. OCT. m
^ The first number of the lyceum
course this season will be Ralph
Bingham, who wiU appear at the
echoed auditorium Thursday evening,
October 20th. Mr. Bingham has
been here twice before and will be
welcomed again. There are many
persons in Walterboro who claim
that he is the-best entertainer ever
heard here in any lyceum course.
It is hoped the attractions this
ilesson will prove especially popular.
Heretofore they have been held in
the Court House, which at its best
was never suitable for such perform
ances. This season the school audi
torium will'be used, and there is no
better hall for such purposes any
where than is this. Much larger
crowds are therefore expected than
ever before. A great many persons
from the adjoining country will take
advantage of this opportunity to
hear theseYsplendid attractions.
Several parties qt young folks are
planning straw rides for the evening
of the 20th, to say nothing of others

SUPREME COURT DECIDES-
» ' o
An important decision has been
handed down by the State Supreme
court in the two stock law cases ap
pealed from this county as test cases.
The tiles of these cases are: Carter
v Barnes, and Rentz v Goodwin. The
Supreme Court decides that the
exemption from the operations of
§ *
the general stock law is constitution
al. at least as set forth in these
cases. There are other cases now
on the way to the supreme court
upon which a decision is expected
that will settle the matter more
clearly than this decision will.
Howell & Gruber^iave been rep
resenting the parties who have been
attacking the constitutionality of the
law; Padgett, Lemacks and Moorer,
the other side.
“COfTON SELLING IDIOT.”
Editor Press and Standard: Please
allow me space in your paper to re
ply to'Some one who isjcriticizing
tl»e “cotton^selling idiot.” The
farmer thdt has been referred to
carried ajbale of cotton to the Wal
terboro Cotton Oil Mill and had it
ginned and it weighed 590 pounds.
Hfe carried it to the depot and had it
weighed again, and it lost seven
pounds, the weight then being 583
pounds. He was offered 13 M6.
but would not sell for that price, so
he carried it to another cotton buyer
in town and he offered him 13 1 8,
and said that he did not care about
it at that price. So he saw the price
was not advancing and decided to
take his cotton home and hunt a bet
ter market. He took it to St.
George and sold it for 13.33 cents, i
Another strange thing about it |
was the same bale weighed at S’. I
George 598 pounds—a difference of
15 pounds, and the amount realized 1
from it was $79.53, gtyd knows that
he is very well paid for the extra.
trouble, for he received $8.83 more.;
, He may be an “idiot” it is true,
but he would be a very poor “idiot” j
if he were to sit down and let people
give any price and weight they saw ,
fit. Being the “idiot” that he is, he I
was not by himself, for when he ar
rived at St. George he was surprised
to see several more “idiots” from
near Walterboro who carried in
eight more bales of cotton and sold
it at the same time. He did not
lone 3-16 cents per pound as the
other writer has said. The moral to
this is true. - The “Idiot.”
