COTTON SELLING
There are a apeciea of tottdn aail*
era to this community who need
sympathy, if it would do them any
good r but it will not, we fear. We
refer to thdt clase of cotton eellerd
who every year preach the doctrine
that any ootton market in the coun
try beata Walterboro as a cotton
market. Now we candidly delict
believe this, and when it comes to
getting us to believe it, we are from
Missouri. Whenever we have taken
the trouble to investigate the matter
we have found that on corresponding
days Walterboro was paying just as
much if not a little '‘mucher” than
*
any adjacent market.
Now we do not care so much if
cotton is sold in this county whether
or not it comes to Walterboro,
though Walterboro is a good place
to sell cotton, that is not the point.
Colleton cotton should be sold in Col- j
leton, not in Dorchester, Bamberg ;
or Orangeburg couftties.' We be- 1

THAT CUT-OFF PETITION.
We are informed that another of
those periodical attempts to get up
a petition to annex Warren township
to Bamberg county is now being
made. We are not alarmed over
this attempt, because we do not be
lieve that the intent is very serious.
In fact, from what we can learn, the
petitions are being carried round b>

muneration bf certain of the pro-1 er . here paid i:|5-16c. So he not

THE ROAD COMMISSION.
We desire to endorse the plan of
taking the road work of the county
out of the hands of the county sup
ervisor and commissioners, as at
present, and placing it in the hands
of a competent road commission, to
be appointed by the governor. This
will have the effect of removing this
very important work from the realm
of politics and placing it on a busi
ness basis. Road working is not a
political- work, but an engineering
and practical science. There are
men trained in the science of road
building^JM will be demonstrated
when the mile of road being con
structed in this county now by the
United States expert, Mr. Wells, is
completed^ and we opine that if we
are wise in Colleton we will endeavor
to continue the good work and will
see the wisdom of employing just
such a man as Mr. Wells to direct it.
The more we see of the work done
by Mr. Wells and his methods the
mdre are we convinced that it re
quires just as much trained ability
to build good roads in Colleton
county as it does in New York,
FTMce or Germany. It is time for
us to get rid of the idea that '‘any
body can build a good road/’ for it
to pot true.
/ Balt aw uacd funds -with which to
apd. tfcb brings us back to a
Lyceuiji Association at. Still
water, Minn., which is now in
corporated and a part owner of
(Tie fine schools in that city.
President Weld has had the man
agement of a Lyceum course for
twelve yeys and now, at Moor
head, conducts one of the. best in
tne state. His opinion as to its
value has weight:
“A course of Lyceum attrac
tions affords instructive and
wholesome entertainment at
moderate cost. Such a course of
entertainments has a distinctive
mission, and it reaches a large
class of individuals. An effective
lecturer exerts a stimulating and
very direct influence upon the
minds of his hearers, and, in
directly, he touches the lives of
many other people. The value
of good lectures to the moral and
intellectual life or a community
cannot be estimated. The town
which supports a Lyceum course
is trying to keep abreast of the
times, and many a community,
believed to be dead to things in-
tejlectiial, has been aroused to
enthusiastic support of all good
things under the guiding influ
ence of a Lyceum course. There
are very few towns in which a
Lyceum course may not be made
a success. A little work, care-;
ful advertising, and a judicious
selection of lecturers and other
attractions will insure good re
sults, always. Strong attrac
tions always bring the hest re
turns from every point of view.
A Lyceum course is a success, if
the enterprise breaks gyen. The
best returns to a community are
not in money values. It is an
encouraging sign to note - the
active interest which small com-
munities are taking in the Ly
ceum course, and the prediction
may be safely made that the Ly
ceum Bureau will continue to
exert an increasing influence in
the shaping of
conotming
tint tad wholesome entertain
