COUNTY BOARD TO HEAR PETI m TheCoun f y Board of Education ha$ had presented to it a petition from certain of the patrons of the Young’s Island school district, ask ing to be cut off, thus forming a new district to be known as the Meggetts School district. The Board has ap- pointed Friday. September 16 to c »nsider this petition, at which time a hearing will be held. B<*nding Colleton County for the purpose of building better roads is to U» one of the live questions till it is done, or voted down, and perti nent to a discussion of this matter, the following extract from a speech made before the North Carolina Press Association and Good Roads Association, by, Dr. Joseph Hyde Platt, State Geologist, will be found pertinent: ^ • * Personally I believe that the best way to raise funds to carry on good road construction the quickest and to the best advantage is foy the counties and townships to issue bonds for this purpose. The issuing of •bonds by the county will mean but a very small iflerease in taxes, which, H ,Leon as t ^ ie Jears 80 ^- v ’ W *N ^ more an d more counterbalanced by the increase other tax- to the im- Thtre ha-t l>een a vast am *unt of work done at the grounds of the Colleton County Fair Association since their purchase in the early summer. The first thing done was to dig up the pine trees and have i, IsUndton.! them made fnto lumber, and this tt. w:u , no iSrna ;; j u b. The logs wire auwed by Savage’s mill, making about 30,000 feet of fine lumber, ihe stumps were thei buried to get them out of the way, and the land grubbed. The next work was the building of the fence to enclose the grounds. , This is a hoard fence nine feet high, : projecting board* two ftpt. higher |on which there will be two strands ! of barbed wire, making the ft nee 11 feet high. Thus protected there .vill be no free entrants at the- Fair this fall. There was considera ble comment after the last Fair as to the number of persons who climbed over the fence and entered free, but Jr., j the number who beat this year can probably be counted on the fingers of pne hand. The work now engaging the atten tion of the superintendent is the claying of the quarter of mile race track, This was laid off by C. E DuRant, the well known young civil engineer, and is elliptical in form, occupyin@/the front half of the grounds. The work of claying this has been under the immediate Lariacy presented this petition last | , , ,, , , week and a-kH f«r an irmncliGn.
