Irmo, July 4.—Special: We folks among the red hills 4re at last enjoy ing “The good old summer time." And with it cornea an abundance of fine fruit. If you Colletonians would like to have some good fruit you can , certainly find it here,in the “Dbtch Forit." ' \ Rev. J. C. Harrison of Smoaka, has been holding a protracted meeting at Union Chapel for the past week. We certainly enjoyed the exMlIent aertnona he delivered while here. We believe that much good was se date hard a are concern. The usual stock of all kinds of hardware wi l be carried, and in addition, a full line of farming implements will al ways be in stock. The officers of this institution are. L R Dowling, President; K F Warren, Vice President; A R Speaks, Secretary-Treasurer; J*F Drawdy, Manager. The building formerly occupied by E W Peeples has been purchased, and*a brick building 40 X 100 feet will i»e erected. The company svill open its doors for ,business Septem ber 1st. - • ^ # — NOTICE In is desired that everybody who has any of their family buried in the Shiloh cemetery, and those who expect to occupy any space in this cemetery, meet there on Tuesday, July 19th, to have a work d*y to clean up the ground. Those who are not present may not get any lots as the squares will be stoked off that day and allotted to the differ ent ones. It is also requested that each one bring a little change along carry the mail on Route No. 1. In addition to carrying the mail on this route. Mr. Berry is a successful farmer. S. P. J. Garris and P. C. Garris have some very fine corn, not-with- standing the fact that heavy rains have fallen. P. C. Garris has some of the best corn your correspondent has ever seen. Especially is it re markable for its thick stand arid well eared stalks. It has been said that Mr. Garris has fourteen acres that will yield f>**0 bushels or more. He has this crop on a one horse farm. J. W. Kinsey lost a $75.<JO horse last week. Not long ago Mr. Kin sey purchaser! this horse from F. J. Berry of Smoaks. Death was due to throat trouble. J. M. Smoaks reported having eat en a watermelon on the fourth Sun day in June. In this respect Mr. Smoak always leads the community. Melons are hardly to be heard of in many patches. The rains have ruined them. . Th? Smoaks Literary Society met Saturday night; this being the sec ond melting. The subject for dis cussion was “Resolved, that the ne gro should be banished to Africa." Affirmative- Eric Sauls and A. P. Smith; negative Clemson Garris and J. Martin Rushton. Neither side had any time much to prepare their talks, therefore, the debate was not <s, as good as would have been other wise. After cartful consideration t of the Judges they rendered their decision in favor of the negative. The crowd was large, several visit ors being present. Among them were the Misses Berry of Branch- ville. the Misses Arnett of Walter- terboro, Mrs B X Minus of Branch- ville. Mrs Minui gave us one of the most pointed talk* we have had this season, which was well token. We would be glad to have Mrs Min us with us at every meeting, know ing as we do, that her aid would invailable to the maintainance of the society. The soejety meets next Saturday night, and we have a good query, ao let everyone come out and take part. Fvery young person in the community should by all to help defray expenses. We- hope, means attend these meetings, for he that all will attend :n order that all or she who expects to be lifted up will be satisfied. must help lift themselves! J. H. Benton The Quarterly Meetings was held Ruffin, July 8. at Smoaks Saturday by Presiding Elder Smith. Dr. Smith preached one of the ablest sermons to which we have ever listened last Sunday morning. The audience was large. The picnic at Smoaks, July 4th, was attended by a large crowd from far and near npt-with-standing the inclemency of the weather. Able addresses were delivered bv D B Peurifoy, Esq., of Waiterboro, P C Garris, Prof. J C Guilds of Bam berg and George Warren of Hamp ton. The welcome address was de- ivered by J C Rushton. The top ics of the day were of unique im portance. Mr Peurifoy spoke on the subject “Progress," Mr Garris "The Birth of the American Nation on the 4th of July." Mr Guilda, "The Vision of Life," and Mr Warren. "Education." After the speaking a bountiful dinner was served and everybody in vited to satisfy this inner man.
