So far Circuit Judge Memminger,
of Charleston, seems the most prom
inently mentioned of the probable
candidates for the place. His friends
are said to l>e finding around quietly
and laying their lines for the smooth
execution of their plans, and on the
other hand the opposition is already
forming. Judge Memminger i* ad
mitted to be a man of deep culture
and of great ability along several j
lines, but his crisp remarks from the
bench and his manner of handling
various members of the bar, have
raided up for him a generous crop °f
enemies. It is argued by these gen
tlemen that Judge Memminger hasj
not the judicial temperament, while
on the other hand he has rather
more than his share of temper. Some
of his rulings have been sharply crit- j l
icised from the legal standpoint. On
the other hand the Charleston jurist
made many new admirers by his ad
dress on the jury system at the re
cent commencement of the Univer
sity of South Carolina. This deliv
erance is conceded even by hi* po
litical enemies to have been a rarely
thoughtful paper on a vital and
timely subject. This suggests the
idea that in many quarters Judge
Memminger is held to be peculiarly
fitted for that kind of thing; it is
said he can and should write for the
benefit of brother barristers and
that in this field he would find the
best use for his talents.

that he felt his time here was short,
but he was ready to go. He had
been a sufferer for at least two
years, and on June 14, 11*10, he
passed away, in his OHth year, and
on the next day was buried at
Doctor’s Creek Cemetery, amid a
large circle'of sorrowing friends and
relatives, having been a member of
the Haptist church of this place for
many years and leaving behind him
a wife, two sons and three daugh
ters. The funeral sendees were

SOLDIER DIES OF WOUNDS.
Beaufort, June 16.—Resulting
from shot wounds received a month
ago in an affray with the Potter
brothers, negroes living near the
garrison. Private Frank J. Quigley
of the 127th coast artillery, stationed
at Fort Fremont, St. Helena bland
death being directly due to hemor
rhages from the lungs, caused by
the entrance of small shot. Quigley,
who enlisted from Auburn, N. Y.,
thought to be out of danger,' but
hemorrhages began suddenly Tues
day morqjng and death resulted.^ •
The shooting of Quigley followed
the wounding of other soldiers, who
were fired upon from ambush by
negroes. Quigley and five other
privates went to the house of Will
Potter, who was accused of being
responsible of the attack from am
bush and the fight which ended fatal
ly for Quigley ensued. The Potter
brothers, who declared the trouble
resulted from the intimacy of one of
the soldiers with WiM Potter’s wife,
were placed under arrest shortly
after the difficulty. >■ - vJ*-
The incident is at present being
investigated by court-martial pro
ceedings in Savannah.
