CLEMSON EXTENSION WORK AND
ARTICLE X. HOUSE FLIES.
Seldom is a second thought given
to the common house fly. It has al
ways been considered a nuisance,
bjt recent studies have shown it to;
*t>e very much more than a mere nui
sance. The germs of intestinal and
fl:th diseases are readily carried in
large numbers from the excreta of
patients' suffering from typhoid,
dysentery and cholera direct to food
attended for human consumption
and even to the Angers and lips of a
babe or sleeping person.
Flies breed in filth and offal of any
kind, preferring above all else the
fresh droppings of horses and mules.
Large numbers will develop in hu
man excrement and in garbage bar
rels, at places where dish water is
thrown out and wherever animal or
vegetable matter occurs.
The adult flies are constantly pass
ing back and forth from such ma
terials, where they deposit their
eggs, to other materials upon which
they themselves feed. They prefer
sweets, but are attracted by almost
any kind of human food.
Flies do not ordinarily travel to
any great distance and if a little care
is taken their numbers may be
greatly reduced. Especially does
the farmer have the chance of abat
ing the pest so far as his own prem
ises are concerned.
The eggs laid by flies hatch in
about a day into the familiar white
moggota. After about five days
spent feeding, if the food supply is
unlimited, and a couple of days in a
resting stage, the adult flies appear.
It takes them slightly more than a
week from fly to fly. If manure can
be dispoeed of, hauled to either the
field or a com poet heap some dist
ance from the house every five or
seven days, no flies will be able to
develop. If it is not possible to
thus dispose of the manure, it may
be possible to provide a room, dark
and thoroughly screened, into which
the manure may bd put until it can
be disposed of.
Of all the substances used to kill
or repel flies the one which has
proven most satisfactory as ordinary
air slaked lime. Lime is a first class
deodorant. A free use of it around
all stables, privies and garbage cans
will cause those places to lose half of
their disagreeable features, and
they will cease to be attractions and
breeding places for that menace to
health—the common house fly.

FIT MEN FOR JURORS.
One of our State exchanges com
plained last week that good men
were not drawn to serve on the
juries in its county.
If that was the case the trouble
ought to be very easily located.
The clerk of the court, the county
auditor and the county treasurer are
the jury commissioners.
The law plainly says that only
good men shall be drawn to serve on
the juries.
If unfit raen^are drawn to serve as
jurors, the jury commissioners are
responsible for it.
Such things do not happen by acci
dent.
The law plainly says that the jury
commissioners shall know the men
drawn to serve on the juries—shall
know that they are men of good
moral character, men of intelligence,
etc. The law says that if the com
missioners do not know that a man
drawn to serve as a juror is a fit man
shall reject him.
There is no way under the sun by
which an unfit man can get on the
jury except by the consent of the
jury commissioners.
Sc that if in any county there
should be unfit men on the juries,
the people should hold the jury com
missioners responsible—that is, if
they want good men as jurors.—An
derson Daily Mail.

Zoology.
IT PAYS TO FERTILIZE THE
LEGUMES.
While peas and other legumes will
get nitrogen for us from the air,
and will furnish the materials for
increasing the humus in the soil,
they draw heavily on the mineral
mattersjn the soil, phosphorus and
potassium, and hence must be sup
plied with these if they are to do
their part in the improvement of
the soil.
|(Years ago a man in Alabama
wrote to me that what I had been
writing about peas improving the
land was all a humbug, for he had
taken twelve crops in succession off
a |i*ce of land, and the soil go so
poor that it would not grow peas.
There is no crop grown that can be
taken annually off the land and
nothing returned without impover
ishing the soil, and the legume crops
arc no exception. They consume
phosphoric acid and potash largely,
ami these they cannot get from the
air, and if they are not supplied in
fertilzers, the pea, or any other
legume, will exhaust the supply of
those in the soil.
Hut where phosphoric acid, and,
in most sections, some potash, are
applied in a liberal manner, the
legumes will enable us to dispense
with the purchase of nitrogen, or
a monia c in any form,—W. F.
Massey, in Raleigh (N V C.) Progres
sive Farmer and Gazette.
MW TO KILL MIT GRASS.
The only way 1 know to kill nut
grass is not to 1st it show a leaf
above ground. This means constant
cleaning off, for it will be up next
day, but if constantly prevented
from making green leaves the roots
will die. Nut grass spreads more
from seed than from the roots, and
being neglected late in the season, it
fills the soil with seed, and nothing
but constant vigilance will eradicate
it. I have just made a garden here
from a piece of land that is full of
it, and I am going to do just what I
advise; clean up every shoot every
day. Nothing short of this will an
swer. Geese penned on the spots
will keep it down, it is said, but
have never tried them.—W. F. Mas
sey, in Raleigh (N. C.) Progressive
Farmer and Gazette.
